DD’s YouTube video - is this a normal number of views?!

Just found out that DD (13) has created a YouTube channel where she uploads inane, very short videos, most of which just have 10-50 views (presumably her/her friends).

However, one has 4,000 views and one has 6,000 views - they are about 15 seconds long, one is of her filming whilst we were driving along a motorway and it’s of the motorway barrier and cars going past with a music track; the other one is even more inane.

Is this normal?! How on earth do these videos have so many views?

If they're YouTube shorts it's normal. YouTube is really pushing these at the moment and most seem to get a few thousand views after a week

Traffic videos could be toddler parents? My DS loves watching bus journey videos Hmm

Thank you, that’s slightly reassuring! Who ARE all these people watching completely dull short videos done by random teenagers?!

why are you judging her watchers?

you are the one with no idea what your young kid is posting on the www!!

Wigeon · 27/03/2022 18:41

Saxenda, do you have a 13 yo? It’s very hard to keep track of all their online activity! We do have the passcode to her phone and still do check it from time to time. We are more strict than some of her friends’ parents with screen time, controls on her phone where we have to approve any app download she wants etc.

As soon as I found out she had this channel (as DD2 was looking at it!) I did say that she should have told us. Her first comments were that none of the videos showed her or her friends (which is true). There are only about 15 videos, they’re all very short and all very safe and not inappropriate in any way.

One of the ones with 1000s views is literally of a motorway crash barrier and the tops of the cars on the other carriageway, as we drove along one day, for 15 seconds, with a pop music backing track! I honestly have no idea why 1000s of people have watched that! Grin

i have 5 children, youngest is now 14

so yes. but its up to you what you allow....just not sure why you are judging others for watching the content....you don't know why its being watched, just like you don't know what your kid is up to!

each to their own i guess!

mynameiscalypso · 27/03/2022 18:49

Honestly, my toddler DS watches the most random and inane shot on YouTube (people building Brio train sets is a fave but he also is very partial to a video of different German metro stations) and they have millions of views. I assume the bulk are also toddler obsessions. So weird.

jungledoc · 27/03/2022 18:57

One of my watches utter shite on YT. I don't get it.

Various people, especially in the age of tik tok

My 14yr old's peers were obsessed with a v strange video of a microwave a while ago.

It's been viewed millions of times. DS howls with laughter at it.

There are loads of clips on Tiktok and Youtube Shorts that are "vibes"...basically everyday moments underlaid with perfect music. If she used a trending song and it had a nice aesthetic to it then it could very well have gotten those views.

Wigeon · 28/03/2022 21:09

@User134356356 - ah yes, it does fit the “vibes” thing, I guess that’s it?!

@ShowOfHands - that microwave is mildly amusing but a bit baffling why it’s so hilarious to 14 yr olds! DD and her friends do have very random humour with loads of innocuous in-jokes, so I can imagine them getting obsessed with a video like that too. Then giving each other microwave related nicknames, saying “microwave” in class and all cracking up etc etc…!
