Keep car for my son or sell it?

I’m epileptic. I was well controlled until this week when I had a seizure so I’ve lost my drivers license for a year.

I have a 10 year old car and my son turns 17 at the end of this year. My original plan was to keep the car until he passes his test (likely Summer 2023 at the earliest) then I get a car through work and I give him this car.

I don’t have partner or family to drive car. There’s possibly friends but I’m unsure.

The market on second hand cars is ridiculous and I’m looking at 3k for my low mileage 10 year old car. It’s in good nick having just been through full service & mot.

If I keep it I need to look after it for a year. How would I do that? Do I need to stick it up on bricks or get a cover for it? It didn’t like lockdown as the brakes got squidgy for a while though the garage said they were ok.

Would it make more sense to just sell it and get a new car when DS passes his test? What would you do?

Go on a price comparison site and see how much insurance would be once your son passes.
Depending on the engine size, make and model it could be quite high, so you may be better selling & buying a smaller car for him.

If its a good starter car size wise and insurance wise, I'd keep it. Changing cars costs a fortune (but so can starter insurance on the wrong model!).

I kept mine for 2 years for my son to "inherit". A 8 year old aygo. I'd promised myself a sports car for my 50th! He didn't have a parking space though so we delayed everything until he did. He and his girlfriend used it for 2 years before trading in and getting something a little bigger. By far the best option to get him driving economically.

It’s a little Corsa so perfect starter car. I’ll have a look at what the insurance would be for him.

It’ll be on average £2100 to insure for him. It’s one of the cheaper cars to insure

So it wouldn't be driven at all for at least 6 months plus how ever long it takes him to pass his test? That can cause problems - you should as a minimum disconnect the battery - ideally it would be started and moved a bit every few weeks or so - even if it's just a foot forwards and backwards on the driveway.

Do you have somewhere off of the road to keep it? Otherwise you will have to Pay road tax (sorry Vehicle Excise duty - there will always be one on Mumsnet!) - I'm not sure about the legalities of having an uninsured or MOTd car on public roads if it's not actually being driven
