BBQ in a terraced house

Just wondered what others views are on having a bbq in a terraced house? Our garden is small with a small patio by the patio doors then grass at the bottom (so bbq on the patio), we moved from a flat last autumn and had a warm week of bbqs in the garden which we really enjoyed however our next door neighbours made a comment recently along the lines of “what we’re all those bbqs about” which has got me thinking what do others in terraced houses do?

I live in a terrace and we bbq as do our neighbours
We do tend to do ours a little later and once washing is moved in
We had a firepit as well but again only used late and at bottom of garden when smoke is blowing away from houses
My other neighbour has a firepit which he burns his rubbish in whenever he feels like and often we have to shut windows as smell of burning cardboard and plastic is not nice but he is a twat the rest of us use consideration

God our neighbours must hate us! DH has a smoker bbq and does things all day, we're end terraced. Tbh it's low slow cooking, so smoke is at the start for a short time then just smouldering away.

God they must really hate us!

I wouldn't say anything but honestly I would hate it if my neighbours were having a BBQ every day - that smell of gently charring flesh makes me feel a bit ill. In the same spirit I don't play my violin every day and when I do it's when I can't hear my immediate neighbours at home and with the windows shut. Living close to other people we're inevitably going to do things that annoy each but I think there's a social obligation to recognise when we are causing the annoyance and try not to do it too much.

I think its fair dnough once or twice a year for a special occasion but as a regular thing it isn't really on in terraced houses.

So unless you can afford a detached house you can only BBQ on special occasions?

We’ve often had to move inside because of smoke from neighbours bbq so personally I wouldn’t.

Nothing wrong with it, gas or not.

If people just leave the washing in the line, any 'smell' dissipates.

People here are so dramatic about smells/smoke coming into their house, yet are happy to smoke cigarettes or weed. It's bonkers.

Fire pits are fine too, as long as you burn clean/dry wood etc and not rubbish!!

Good neighbour behaviour would be to check for other neighbours washing before lighting, get your own washing in on warm evenings in case neighbours want to have a bbq, and look to move the BBQ location to the end of the garden away from the houses.

Other than that, grill on...

Ok seems fair enough to have it as away from others windows as we can and will look out for washing so we can pre warn the neighbours.
Seems as if no one else along our row of houses ever has bbqs so will try to minimise the annoyance! They do smoke regularly in their garden however, so I do understand other peoples smoke from either smoking or bbqs can be irritating.

I think gas is fine but BBQs that produce a lot of smoke are incredibly antisocial. I live in a small terrace and my neighbour has had a few bbqs with terrible smoke. I had to close all my windows and I could still smell the smoke. They are incredibly bad for human health.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/03/2022 16:56

It's all terraces round here, never stopped anyone barbecuing.

We bought a George Foreman electric bbq last summer. I love it. We also live in a terraced house although we all have fairly biggish gardens.

There is no messing about warming it up, it's so easy to clean and it fits quite a lot of food on.

There is no smoke for anyone to moan about.

Although I can't stop the meat smell Grin wafting in the air.
