Your Most Embarrassing Haircut

Was going through photos earlier on & was reminded of mine. Was about 14 / 15 at the time, and had asked for a slightly longer version of the Victoria Beckham cut. What the hairdresser actually gave me was a half mullet Blush I was absolutely slaughtered for it in school, and my mum admitted a couple of years later she very nearly went in and tore a strip off the hairdresser!

What’s your worst hair do? Self or professionally inflicted!

Aged 13, with long, straight hair, I decided to have a perm. I wanted tiny corkscrew curls. The hairdresser came round to our house after school and by bedtime I looked fabulous! Woke up the next morning and it had all flopped and looked like a heavy, crumpled, wonky mess. I did not enjoy school that day. The hairdresser committed suicide shortly afterwards and I had a number of distasteful comments about it being "because of your hair". Sad

Ugh! I never used to know what cut to go for. In desperation one year I pulled a picture of an Australian Miss World out of my bag. She had a blonde page boy cut. I had a round moon face. Apart from the embarrassment of wondering if the hairdresser thought I really wanted to look like Miss World, (and failing) I saw a circular face looking back at me in the mirror.

Not so much a cut as the colour. I asked for lowlights in my dark blonde hair, but something went wrong and I ended up with orange stripes. I looked like a startled and rather pissed off tabby cat.

Oh don't make me laugh @DramaAlpaca ,I have a cold so I've been hit by a fit of hacking and spluttering 🤣

@Smokeahontas

What’s is the Mumsnet cut?!
Put your hair in a ponytail on top of your head and cut it off, for a lovely layered instant style. Grin

Don’t follow my instructions!

I don’t know what happened, since he’d cut it fine before, and I was probably away with the fairies and not paying attention, but when he showed me the back, it was honestly like a 1940s boy’s short back and sides.

I burst into tears - they said I didn’t have to pay, but I did - went home still in tears and phoned dd (away at uni) - who phoned the salon and gave him a bollocking!! 😂

But only a day or so later same dd phoned in tears to say a student friend of hers, who’d stayed with us, had been killed in a road traffic accident, and my hair - which would soon grow back - felt like a very minor thing after all.

@MarmiteCoriander

Age 8, mid 1980's, I was adamant I wanted the same cut as my dad! Confused

I kept insisting and ended up with a spike fringe, short sides and mullet at the back!

Was he one of the Chuckle brothers?

I had a fringe in the 90s and I would use a round brush under a hairdryer to give it this big rounded bounce. Id then hairspray it to an inch of its life coz if was either rainy or even a bit windy it would go all flat and curly.
One night I was lighting a cigarette off my friends cooker and because of all the hairspray in my fringe it sizzled away to basically a cm in length in some parts! The smell and the instant realisation of what happened!!

My first haircut post having DC2.

I had long one length hair that I was wearing in a ponytail most of the time and thought ‘I need a style…something slightly layered and a bit more polished’.

Note I said SLIGHTLY layered.

Came out with a Suzi Quattro mullet. Fucking Toni & Guy. 🤬

It took FOREVER to grow out, aswell.

SweetPetrichor · 26/03/2022 11:07

I had to grow my hair out over my last uni year from having a Mohawk so that it would be professional looking for getting a job. Had to go through the terrible Karen stage. Fortunately it didn’t last too long but it’s embarrassing.

WasntAllThat · 26/03/2022 11:11

With all the Rod Stewart/Slade/Suzi Quattro styles we’ve been subjected to on MN, WHY does anyone still fall for the MN hair (cough mullet) cut ?! 😆

CPL593H · 26/03/2022 11:13

Early teens I had the 'Purdey' cut. It was a bowl cut with a stepped back and a very heavy full fringe and was named after the character played by Joanna Lumley in the 'New Avengers, who sported this desirable style.

On her it looked great. I was a rather round faced girl with thick heavy rimmed glasses, which were just grazed by the aforementioned fringe. I looked like a confused and unhappy owl. Grin

I wanted a few layers and some feathered bits at the bottom. I was 15 and my mum wheats took us to this ancient salon in the local high street. It was £4 for a trim. I cried when I came out bc as she had literally hacked my hair at the wide so it was like steps. My friends mum had been a hairdresser and was shocked. I went to ask for my money back and she was rude telling me i had to let her fix it first. There was no fixing it! I bc went to bc a better place bc and get my hair chopped to just below my chin (I was gutted). He did a good salvage job but it took years to grow to where I liked it.

Went to Toni and Guy and wanted a trim and a bit of shaping . The girl seemed to be cutting for ages and had taken 7 inches off my hair, it was short and I didn’t want short hair. I cried and they still expected me to pay. I refused as I wanted a trim only.

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 26/03/2022 12:11

Oh god the Frankie from The Saturdays cut circa ‘09. I knew it was bad when, at the end of the cut the hairdresser disappeared and refused to take payment. My mum was in actually tears when she saw and it took years to grow out properly

I moved to UK after marriage .Asked my new DH where to go to get my hair permed. He sent me to his Mum's....Before , I had always had long Pre Raphilite curls done. This name it ended up like Little Orphan Annie . And yes , I have red hair .
I know I can't blame him but I always have. Good job I am divorcing him.
