"I'm from Yorkshire" : anyone else notice this?

Odilla · 24/03/2022 00:06

Why do people from Yorkshire feel the need to tell you that? It is fairly unremarkable given that the collective Yorkshire counties form a large part of England so lots of people are from there.

Yet still they do. Repeatedly. And will shoe-horn this revelation into any given conversation. Eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't like spending money on heating". Well yes I'm sure this is true; nevertheless this is not a special circumstance given that most people do not enjoy spending money on heating. Or they take something that is particular to them and still gas on about Yorkshire eg "I'm from Yorkshire so I don't wear blue shoes".

Never have I met a crowd of people so keen to assert common identity yet so unaware as to how common identity actually works. Although ironically that's an identity of sorts.

OK. So let me get this straight. Yorkshire and Yorkshire folk are the best, unless they're from the county town of York, or Sheffield.

ItsABrandNewDay · 24/03/2022 18:06

@SaintVal

I never understand why people say they are from a county. I always say I'm from X city/town but not the county. Counties are vast and come with so many variables, including accents. I said to someone on the phone yesterday 'the sun is shine in X city' and they replied 'it's also shining in Essex!'. Well, whereabouts in Essex? It's massive!

Anyway, I went off piste there but some of the loveliest people I have met have been 'from Yorkshire'.

If I'm asked where I'm from, I'll often say the county rather than the city as people usually get it so badly wrong. I've had one person who worked in Tourist Information who replied she knew it because it was near another city... they're 150 miles apart.

Its just easier to say the county as people can work it out easier!

Love the post OP!! Soo true.. my DH is from Yorkshire .. you’ve no idea what I have to endure and yes there is always an announcement about being from Yorkshire and hence the tightness/ bluntness/ special relationship with Vikings .. at some point in a conversion …we’ve been to togeather for 10 yrs and he still brings it up!🤣 I do love Yorkshire thou! Xx

Well this thread has made me homesick for Yorkshire and inspired me to book a trip back for later in the year.

DP has only seen Leeds, York and Knaresborough so far, not nearly enough. We might take a side trip up North to beautiful County Durham too.

SummerBluez · 24/03/2022 18:52

Scousers do this. The press conference with that Scouse UFC fighter was painful. Every question was answered with "well I'm from Liverpool lad so...." or "I'm a scouser, me, so...."

We get it. You're special.

surreygirl1987 · 24/03/2022 19:11

YES!! A terrible manager I once had told me to 'shut up' when I asked her about my incorrect pay. When I pointed out how rude she was being, her response was 'I'm from Yorkshire'. 🙈

Depends who's asking. I meet a lot of people in work and general life who aren't British and often haven't been England. If they ask where I'm from I say Yorkshire / England unless they then ask me to narrow it down.

If it's someone British I generally say the nearest big city to my hometown.

Only if someone from the nearest big city asks where I'm from do I say the actual Town. It's meaningless otherwise.

Ps.. Been thinking of the people in my life that most often unprompted mention where they're from. It's Cornwall for both of them, with a bloke from Devon being a close contender.

Yes, well done

"We are like vegans, we have to tell you.

Of course it isn't your fault if you didn't have the good grace of being born in God's own county.

Most people think the Sean Bean advert for Yorkshire tea is a piss take, it isn't, we are serious about out county and there have been moves for independence."

"I kind of do this, but I'm from Lancashire.

I work in engineering and often get asked 'do you want a hand with that, love?' and I ALWAYS go 'No thanks lad, I'm a Lancashire lass! Farming stock!' and then I slap my stocky thigh and doff my imaginary flat cap to them.
They love it. Like a female Fred Dibnah. 😂

I'd probably say it more if I was from Yorkshire......"

I just have to butt in and say that these two posts from earlier in the thread are my favourites 😁

My sister's exmil is the epitome of this. No beach anywhere in the world compared to Bridlington

The first time we visited Bondi Beach, my friend said in tones of deep disappointment “but it’s just like Bridlington”

Odilla · 24/03/2022 23:40

🤣 Yorkshire is everywhere it seems.

Witness:

 1. Bridlington
 2. Knaresborough
 3. Malham Cove

My late DH was a Yorkshireman, but I met him down here in the south which is where we stayed. He never did the "I'm from Yorkshire" thing, but I fell in love with the place and would love to adopt the Yorkshire persona. My inlaws lived in a very unglamorous pit village, but the friendliness was something else and there was gorgeous countryside just minutes away.
Now that FIL is dead and MIL in a nursing home and their house is gone, I'm very sad to not be going up there for weekends regularly any more.

Dita73 · 25/03/2022 01:50

A lot of people from Yorkshire are saying the OP and people agreeing are jealous that they’re not from Yorkshire. What exactly do you think they’re jealous of? Genuine question

sashh · 25/03/2022 02:37
@Puzzledandpissedoff what? I’ve lived in South Yorkshire my entire life and I’ve never not seen cod 😂😂😂
Well you are not in PROPER Yorkshire are you?

HeadPain · 25/03/2022 03:30

Yorkshire is great so I don’t blame them if they do, and I say that as a Lancashire lass who really wants to move to Yorkshire and drives over the border at any given opportunity.

Turningpurple · 25/03/2022 03:42

The first time we visited Bondi Beach, my friend said in tones of deep disappointment “but it’s just like Bridlington”

My ex fil told us Robin Hoods Bay was just like being in Greece 😁

mjf981 · 25/03/2022 05:37

Its interesting how whippets are associated with people from Yorkshire. In my experience, they tend to be quite scared wimpy dogs, who break easily. Not what you'd think a Yorkshire person would want to be linked to!

Actually that's not such a daft thing to say. I lived in Greece for years and can honestly say that the Yorkshire micro-climate and energy in certain parts does remind me of Greece.

Robin Hood's bay is a beautiful spot.

99point6 · 25/03/2022 06:47

@puzzledandpissedoff
Well clearly Strensall is a York suburb and therefore not proper Yorkshire. At least the fish doesn't have skin on.

JennyForeigner · 25/03/2022 06:53
@BrieAndChilli no, they tell each other they're from Yorkshire as well. While in Yorkshire.
Eg

 • has the number 20 bus gone yet?
 • I'm from Yorkshire so yes it has.

The entire place is just full of people saying they're from Yorkshire, day in day out.

That's why the brontes shut themselves in that wee house and didn't talk to anyone for ages. Every time they went outside all they could hear was "I'm from Yorkshire".
Looool to the Bronte bit.

(Married to a Yorkshireman).

My grandfather was greek. I have family in Greece and spent years travelling around Greece, but was raised in Yorkshire.

I respectfully disagree. Grin

JennyForeigner · 25/03/2022 06:59

@VenusClapTrap

I can’t buy rhubarb without asking “Is that Yorkshire rhubarb?” either. And then announcing that I’m from the Rhubarb Triangle.

I have a crown of ancestral rhubarb in my garden.

Is that like a coat of arms? 😀
balalake · 25/03/2022 07:13

Actually, nowadays it is not saying that they are from Yorkshire, it's from Gods Own Country.

Delatron · 25/03/2022 07:14

To be fair Bondi beach is very underwhelming and the beaches along the coast in Yorkshire are stunning. You just don’t get the weather that’s all.
