New Washing machine: stick with Miele or change?

HowDOyouspellIt · 23/03/2022 12:16

My trusty Miele washing machine has given up the ghost (it's about 11 years old). I need a new one, so automatically started searching Miele and nearly passed out when the first one showed up as being nearly £2k!

So my question for you lovely people is: do I suck it up and stick with Miele, or have you another brand/machine you can recommend?

Thanks.

You could buy 4 £500 washing machines for the same price as one Miele. If you expect the Miele to outlast four other machines, go for it, but I wouldn’t.

Our first Hotpoint cost £200 and lasted over a decade; I wouldn’t be that wowed by a more expensive machine lasting only 10 years.

Stick with Miele! I have this one:

ao.com/product/wsg663-miele-w1-washing-machine-white-70559-1.aspx

It's brilliant. When I got it it came with a years free detergent and 10 year guarantee. Currently 6 years old and not one issue. Yes they're expensive, but they are a workhorse and last forever!

My mieles have always lasted 15 years plus - have you thought about repair rather than replace?

If not then dont buy the most expensive miele - ive always bought the cheapest around £800 which works well for me.

I have an AEG which is 6 years old and works perfectly.

Beko also seem to be very good for the price.

I'd probably have a look and see what features a modern washing machine may have and see what's important to you before you look at brands.

Bosch every time. Just buy cheapest no bells or whistles. Last for years.

GahAndTheBear · 23/03/2022 13:27

I’ve got a really standard Bosch. It’s over a decade old and works absolutely fine. Never had a single problem with it.

Hairbrush123 · 23/03/2022 13:35

I love my Bosch. Paid £600 for it and it is excellent.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/03/2022 13:48

You can get a Miele for a lot less than £2k though.

We got a new WM about 18 months ago. I managed to get an end of line deal on an AEG for just under £400. Cheapest Miele was around £6-800? It wasn't a serious consideration though as we've had 11 and 14 years out of mid priced washing machines and for a Miele to work out similarly cost effective, it would need to last around 25 years and I'm not sure they would, or that I have that long left on this earth for that matter.

Thoosa · 23/03/2022 13:51

Another vote for Bosch.

Nearlyadoctor · 23/03/2022 13:52

My Miele is nearly 25years old, I’ve only ever had one other washing machine which was an indesit and lasted less than 2 years. I inherited the Miele off my father when he moved house and it’s used every day.
It’s done dog beds, horse stuff, all my husbands farm work wear over the years. I wouldn’t even consider another brand.
Although as a pp mentioned you can buy one a lot less than 2K

asparalite · 23/03/2022 13:54

Recently replaced our old Miele about 15 years old, with a new model, I'm really disappointed with it though not nearly as good as the old one, feel I've made an expensive mistake!

Nearlyadoctor · 23/03/2022 13:55

Just to add I’ve had it 20 of those 25years .

twosticksandanapple · 23/03/2022 14:55

Given that the warranty for miele is only 2 years now I wouldn't bother and would just get a cheaper brand. I am not convinced Miele's are as good as they used to be.

crossstitchingnana · 23/03/2022 14:59

I had a £200 Zanusi last 9 years and a Hotpoint that cost £270 last for 12. Has both repaired a couple of times.

It was the Miele engineer who came to repair it who said its dead (a recurring error, resulting in an internal leak).

Thanks everyone - plenty to consider here.

I have a Siemens. It's at least 15 years old.

Excited101 · 23/03/2022 15:28

Have a look at ebac, hot fill machines so cost you less to run on power, comparable quality to Milele and prices certainly aren’t £2000 (wtf?!)

Cuck00soup · 23/03/2022 15:38

Miele build quality is the same on entry level machines as the ones with bells & whistles. You don't need the more expensive machines unless you want the technology that goes with it. They should last for 20 years if normal use, but don't always have good guarantees.

Most other manufacturers have higher build quality on their better ranges, so for Bosch as an example you need to be buying series 6 if you want quality.

Cheaper ranges, hoover etc, tend not to be finished as well and so the drum holes might not be filed as well and could snag your clothes. As with everything, there is an element of pit luck.

I would look at guarantees. Samsung & LG tend to be good with 5-10 years.

FrogFairy · 23/03/2022 15:39

John Lewis have a Miele washing machine for £729

Papershade5 · 23/03/2022 15:45

BOSCH for me, ours is on its 10th year and is just starting to squeak a bit. My others lasted about 6 or 7

Comfortableatlast · 24/03/2022 15:04

Our Miele washing machine is twenty two years old in October.
