People on zebra crosses - do t seem to wave/acknowledge/thank you anymore when you stop to let them on? Is it just me?

People pulling out from junctions when shouldn't making you slow down - yep I'm ranting today!

Last one someone sitting in their SUV for 30 mins at school pick up with car still running....,

I always thank unless the person was driving like a dick and looks like they aren't going to stop.

I used to have a colleague who parked up outside school 45 mins prior to drop off. Apparently you had to in order to get a space. I imagine the engine was running during this time. Do you live in an area like that? I get that it's not always possible to walk kids to school as you may not have time before WFH starts or you drive straight to work after so I'm not judging that but the above seems weird to me.

If raising a hand in thanks makes a driver feel a bit more chirpy then it's worth doing

I don't care if the driver us chirpy or not, it shouldn't make any difference to their day if they get a wave or not.

And that probably explains your username...

Anyway, I always give a little wave or a nod and a smile, I hadn't even thought about it until this thread I just do it? It's basic manners 🤷🏼‍♀️

presumably those who wave to drivers at zebra crossings also wave at every passing vehicle for not mounting the pavement and running them over?

DaisyDozyDee · 23/03/2022 07:29

@Febrier

I generally wave an acknowledgment to cars who stop, but on one occasion I didn’t. I was just having a really bad day and quite frankly not bursting in to tears was all I could muster. The car driver wound her window down to call me an ignorant c&£@.
I had this happen to me. I was carrying a wriggling 4 year old, a bag and trying to push a pushchair with the baby in it. I’m not sure how many free hands the guy expected me to have to be able to wave as well.
crispmidnightpeace · 23/03/2022 07:41

I've never driven. When I cross and a car stops to let me go when they don't have to, I say thanks. When it's my right of way to cross, I just go. I suppose there is an argument for thanking as you thank people simply for doing their job, say at McDonald's, but then again the driver isn't doing anything special, just stopping when they should. I don't know, it just seems natural to just cross. I'm usually ushering my child across quickly and sticking my hand out is just not my priority.

@DuckyNoMates
I do not exist to make drivers chirpy. If their driving ability is that affected by their mood then they shouldn't be on the road
Of course it doesn't affect their driving ability - what a ridiculous thing to say!

Exactly my point. it doesn't and shouldnt have any affect on their driving whatsoever they should follow the rules and not get arsey if I wave or not. I don't expect them to wave if I wait for them before I cross the road.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/03/2022 08:33

I do usually acknowledge drivers who stop at zebra crossings - there are plenty who don’t around here!

There’s nothing to say anyone ought to, but if nothing else, maybe it encourages courtesy (in stopping) in future.

There’s no real reason why anyone should thank the bus driver when they get off, or for that matter the postman when he delivers - they’re only doing their job - but I do both anyway. (Our postman is lovely.)

Stationary cars with idling engines is another matter - that makes me livid.
