Right I'm moving home in around 2-3weeks,
Can people advise me on what I need to do 1st, who do I tell etc.
Do I wait till I'm in the property to tell banks etc or do it now....
I'm clueless so any help to get me going would be fab.

Start packing asap and label each box with which room it needs to go in.

Not an exhaustive list, but some pointers:

  • Ensure you do a meter reading (gas, electric, water if possible) and log it with your supplier. Take a photo of the final meter reading from the meter in case you need proof.
  • Go online and redirect your Mail to your new home. I think it takes seven days to kick in. This gives you time to advise your new address to each new supplier/provider individually after you move.
  • Let your phone and broadband know that you are moving. There's an option for this online and by phone I think. Let them know your last date in your current home.
  • If you are moving outside their catchment area your phone company may be unable to let you keep your existing phone number, so apply ASAP, with your move/completion date for your new landline/broadband. The new company will likely handle this for you. If you want to keep your landline number (in the same catchment area) be sure to tell them or you may be assigned a random landline number. Don't forget there are likely to be connection charges at the new landline address.
  • when you arrive at your new home go to the meter cupboard and take meter readings and pass onto the utility company. Take a photo in case you need proof later.
  • go online and let your Council know you are moving home so you stop paying tax to them. Contact your new council online (after you move is OK) and register with them. Don't forget to claim your single person 25% discount if applicable
  • re-register for voting at your new address (again online is easier)
  • register with new GP practice ASAP (registration forms are usually available to print online I think) then hand them in to your chosen surgery. Keep copies.
  • register with a new dentist. You may find it hard to get an NHS dentist though...

That's all I can think of for now. Good luck. 🌹

Wow thabk you for taking the time to write all that helpful info! Will start on some of that today. Packing is my issue I'm finding it hard to know where to start, I'm sorting kids clothes toys out so just need to box them up but no point yet as still a few weeks away. Same for kitchen and bathroom I've sorted all the rubbish etc out but can't pack has will still need stuff till we move. Feel like I'm in limbo just waiting till nearer the date but need to start somewhere.

Start with packing your own stuff that you've not used in ages. Only leave out stuff you'll need over the next week or so (incl a warm hoodie, blanket etc as it can still be chilly). Pots and cooking and you don't use often? Pack them too. Packing can take longer than you think...

Make sure you have enough packing boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, etc.

Stuff to get rid of:

  • find out the times your recycling centre is open and whether or not you need to make an appointment. Some things you can get your council to collect (book online) though there may be a charge.
  • some things you can put in your front garden if you have one with a note for people to help themselves.
  • perhaps some things can go to charity shops if they're now redundant?

When you’ve moved, you’ll need to update your driving licence.
