Anyone left a job they like?

Has anyone left a job they enjoy for an other in a different company? How did it go?

I am about to do this (ie hand my notice in today) and feeling nervous about it.

I am moving because there is no chance for progression at my current place, and even though I like it, I don't want to be doing it forever. I'd be disappointed if I was still doing the same job in 5 years. But I enjoy the people and the day to day is easy. New job is similar salary (a bit higher) but the overall package is significantly better. And will be a challenge in the direction I want my career to go in. So why am I so nervous?!

How long have you been in your current role? The nerves around the change are normal especially if you don't actually hate your job.

I left a job after 13yrs that I still really enjoyed, I was bloody good at and I knew inside out. I left because there was no progression and there were changes coming that I didn't want to have to deal with.
I stayed in the same organisation but moved to a completely new area of business and I was terrified. I hated not knowing everything I needed to and the training was pretty intense, 2 years on it's definitely been the best move and I really enjoy the role I do now.

Oh I posted almost exactly this about 3 weeks ago. I handed my notice in last week and leave at Easter. I'm swinging wildly between madly excited and absolutely terrified, but I know its the right thing for me. A new challenge, totally different job from what I've done for the last 20 years at my old place. Better quality of life and a step up. Worst case is I hate it and move on again in a couple of years after I've got the experience of the move up under my belt..
Good luck!!!

I’ve done it a few times for various reasons. The last one was the hardest as I left some very good colleagues behind and although many people in my new workplace are lovely management are not. However it has pushed me to look elsewhere and we’re about to make a huge move as a family to an amazing place. I get the impression from my colleagues who haven’t moved jobs before that they are much more fearful of leaving whereas I tend to take the view that if it doesn’t work out I’ll just move on. Good luck!

Yep, loved the team and didn't mind the job but there was no room for progression so I moved. It was a leap of faith, I liked the new job well enough but I did have pangs of regret. Now I've been here for a few years I love it and can't imagine being stuck in it. I'd remember why you applied for the new one.

I've done it twice. Once for guaranteed hours and a qualification and once for progression and money.

I never regretted either change. It's always scary starting somewhere new but once you're settled you'll be fine. Make sure you leave on good terms and you might find you have a fallback plan just in case!

Im looking to leave my current job. I love it, im good at it and ive done it for a number of years. Progression is very limited but wage is good and its very flexible in terms of hours.

My fuel costs are racking up to several hundreds a month and things within the work place are rapidly falling, were being asked more and more of with no recognition and nothing in return. Moral is pretty bleak.

Im struggling to find something that matches my wage and is night work though thats also closer to home.

Yes I did OP and regretted it, in that I missed my team and work colleagues and the banter. That aspect of the workplace is as important as the work itself and the benefits, - which I realized after that.

Gentlemanwiththistledownhair · 22/03/2022 08:50

I've been here 4 years. But before I came here I left a job I hated, which is probably reason for the nerves: I am aware that the people are very important for job enjoyment.

However, my job role has changed significantly due to covid and too many junior people having left and not replaced. As a result I am now pretty much working at a lower level than I was before and it's frustrating

That sounds like a good move to me! I did, because I got 'promoted' at the same time as the job above me got downgraded (public sector), so I wouldn't get a pay rise - just a title change and more responsibility.

HotChoc10 · 22/03/2022 09:01

To add: I have regretted it at some points, as I had great friends at my last job and don't have that now. But I think I would have also regretted staying in the circumstances so just have to make the best of it.

Normal to be nervous I think! You're going from something comfortable and known to the unknown. Sounds like a good move, well done for being ambitious and moving onwards and upwards! Hope it all goes well.

And thankyou to everyone else for their opinions and supportive comments!

I've done it, notice is handed in, so onwards and upwards! 🤞 I feel better for having made and carried out my decision tbh
