Hello,
Just wondering if anyone could help.
My Gran has recently moved to a different country to live with other relatives. She is in her late 80s, has the early stages of dementia and needs more support now.

The relatives that she has moved in with have asked if I would start writing her letters to keep in touch; as she was always someone who wrote letters to her friends and she misses it.

I said of course I would but I am stuck. I've never written a letter to anyone before and I'm not really sure what you are meant to write about.
I am unsure if she would be able to respond so I dont know if questions about her are appropriate?

I am just curious really, what did/ do you write about in letters?

When I used to write to my grandma, it would be cheerful facts about what plants were growing in our garden, what I’d been doing in school, reminiscences about things I’d done with her. No direct questions but when she did feel up to replying she would typically follow up on things I’d talked about. Generally I tried to keep it upbeat.

Open with “Dear Grandma,” and then a new paragraph starting your letter. End on a new line with “lots of love” then your name :)

Include photographs of places you’ve been etc!

I used to write to my nan, is just tell her anything that had happened. She liked nature so I'd tell her what birds I'd seen, what flowers were growing in my garden, literally just the minutiae of my life. When she died we found them all, she'd kept them Smile

Dear Granny,
I hope you re enjoying living in X.
We have been quite busy here. Last week i went to a cafe with my friend Mary (remember you met her at my wedding, she was wearing a big orange feathered hat that you admired). Anyway, while we were there eating the most delicious cake ...

Like you would if you were chatting.

Thats a lovely thing to do. Try to imagine you're having a conversation and you might find it easier. General stuff like what you've been doing, funny things that have happened, new things you've bought and of course the weather! Which can then include things like eg I see that Spring is here as I've seen some daffodils etc to I got caught in the rain yesterday. Or things you both know about like I was thinking about the day that or that blue cardigan such and such used to wear. Hope thats helpful.

Same as you would email to a mate who has moved abroad (esp to another inconvenient time zone so you don't chat often)

Anything and everything about what's happening in your life. And remember to ask what she's up to, and follow up if she mentions that she's about to do something. It really is just a conversation

Thank you,
These are really helpful, I think I've been thinking of it like how I would text someone instead of how I would have a conversation Smile
