I'm planning a trip to Edinburgh just me and 10 year old ds on the way to stay with pals in another part of Scotland in the Easter holidays

We've been before and done Camera Obscura, the zoo and the Museum

What might I have missed? Can anyone who's been with similar aged children recently recommended anything I might not have though of please? 🤩

The dungeon is good fun, if he's up for that.

Workyticket · 21/03/2022 19:03

Oh - I ruled that out the last time as he's a bit scared of the dark but he's 10 now and might be more keen.

I'll look at pics with him.

The ghost walks are fun too

Ilovecharliecat · 21/03/2022 19:05

there's a children's museum on the Royal Mile (well there was when i visited about 10 years ago)

midsomermurderess · 22/03/2022 15:53

Could you go up Arthur's Seat with him? There are some fairly easy routes up and great views. Portobello on the seaside could be fun. There are some nice cafes, and arcades if that appeals. There's also Gorgie Farm, the urban farm about 2 miles from the city centre. That could also be fun.

My son absolutely loved The Real Mary King's Close. It's really interesting, this mediaeval tangle of streets totally hidden by later developments.

Harry Potter guided walks can be fun, Dynamic Earth is pretty dull in my opinion.

Mary King’s Close?

FelicityPike · 22/03/2022 16:12

Dynamic Earth is such a waste of money. Boring, dull yawn fest.

workwoes123 · 22/03/2022 16:12

Took my 11 and 14 year olds to Mary Kings Close a couple of months ago, they loved it. Then a pub munch at Deacon Brodies on the Royal Mile.

Wandering up and down Victoria street, the Grassmarket, Greyfriars Churchyard (to look for Tom Riddle's grave).

The National Museum is always worth a second visit IMHO, especially if there are any good exhibitions on. And the Castle is good for a visit too.

If the weather is good, a walk up Arthur's Seat or down to Leith gives you a different view on the city.

Gorgie farm has shut down permanently.

BigFatLiar · 22/03/2022 16:17

Botanic Gardens, the castle

GrandTheftWalrus · 22/03/2022 16:23

@Tretchikoff

Gorgie farm has shut down permanently.
Did it not reopen under another name?
SheWoreYellow · 22/03/2022 16:24

It did.

GrandTheftWalrus · 22/03/2022 16:26

Yeah I thought so. Just googled and yes it's open again as love Gorgie farm.

SheWoreYellow · 22/03/2022 16:27

The museum of childhood is more interesting for adults IMO.

I had a fun and very expensive 20 minutes at John Knox House with my 11 year old. We also popped into the portrait gallery. Both are nice as a quick little thing on the way to something else. Ice cream up by the castle? There’s an ice cream shop and a nice view without paying. You might want to pay, but it’s just another castle…

Gorgie Farm did reopen. Here's the website www.lovegorgiefarm.org.uk/
