Do you allow things to be eaten before paying?

In a supermarket etc

When I walk around, I do open something to keep DS quiet. Works a treat.

Nobody has ever told me off or questioned me on it

Is this the done thing in the UK? Can think of a few countries it would be allowed in and nobody would say anything

But you could never do that in Japan for example, South Korea either

It’s one of my biggest pet hates, I actually get cross at myself at how much I hate it. I’ve lived to 57 without the need to crack open a sandwich as I do my shopping. My DD also managed to survive a trip around Asda without me having to rip open a packet of buttons.
It’s very bad manners and I judge those who do it.

I’ll await the dozens of people making all kind of excuses as to why they need to do this.

tigerbird · 21/03/2022 18:48

Never done this and was ever allowed to as a child either.

I did appreciate shopping in Tesco when DD was small though, because they would have a free fruit snack for kids by the front door, especially the satsumas and bananas. I think that’s great - promotes eating fruit as well as being generous to families shopping.

LaraDeSalle · 21/03/2022 18:50

I never allowed my children to eat anything before paying, simply because it teaches them to do it as they get older and go to the shops themselves which could lead to them mistakenly been taken for shoplifters.

Newyearnewme2022 · 21/03/2022 18:50

No, never did it with mine and I have one with SEN who can be a nightmare in a supermarket. I don’t think it ever occurred to me to do it. I can’t say I’ve noticed other people eating their way round the store either which shows I’m not very observant!

LottyD32 · 21/03/2022 18:51

Imagine seeing someone in pyjamas w
Ripping open a multiple to give each child a snack 😲 the horror!

🙄

I love summer in Sainsbury’s. We often grab a bag if charcoal and one of those trendy little bucket BBQs and cook a few Kebabs from the meat cabinets. Though the packaging can be quite messy when we put it through the till and DH once melted the conveyor belt by not letting the BBQ bucket cool down properly.

Hesma · 21/03/2022 19:00

Never, not acceptable and children need to learn from a young age to pay before consuming items

cranberryhaddock · 21/03/2022 19:06

Not got kids, but I wouldn't have done this. Provided kids are getting decent regular meals, they don't need to eat something straight away, and it's good for kids to understand that sometimes they need to be patient and wait.

There aren't enough laughing emojis in the world for this post

Maybe this is a new shoplifting scheme. Eat the banana before you leave as a way around the exit security.

Yep, it's one of mine too. Only thing I hate more than seeing a kid sat in trolley eating items clearly not paid for yet, is seeing them on a phone/tablet. Supermarkets are great opportunities to interact with your kids. There's all sorts of counting and colour games you can play to get them involved. Everything just has to be so rushed and quick these days.

@Justleaveitblankthen

I think the end of a bagette idea is genius in an emergency 🤓 In general though, I don't think it's great for anyone to be grazing mindlessly as they roam/are pushed around anywhere outside. Whether they are tots or adults.. You don't see it in Europe at all ( not where I live anyway )
Has to be a full house doesn’t if? We’ve had lazy parenting, obesity crisis, now someone to tell us that people don’t do it in Europe (is that meant to be the gold standard paragon of parenting btw?)

So true. I once let toddler DD eat under the table like a cat, next thing you know she’s pooing in the neighbours’ gardens and can’t sleep til she’s walked around in circles clawing someone’s lap. The Whiskas bill is killing us.
AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/03/2022 19:29

@Maroposista out of everything in the world anyone does, those are the 2 things you hate most? Wow.

My mum Never did this, we’d dig in at home. I remember I was quite surprised the first time I saw it. It was a pregnant woman and she gave the check out woman an empty crisp and she said sheepishly ‘sorry I couldn’t resist!’

Thunderpunt · 21/03/2022 19:36

I allow it.....but then I have a restaurant WinkGrin

Ah, the perfect parenting of someone without kids.

crips · 21/03/2022 19:39

Why can't you use this as a lesson to respect other peoples property?

mnnewbie111 · 21/03/2022 19:43

I have of the kids are going being annoying and I just need them to be quiet. No one bats an eyelid

Buyitinbamboo · 21/03/2022 19:43

2 kids and never done this as don't really feel the need
However both my parents and grandparents used to let me do this as a kid and I turned into a decent human who doesn't steal so I'm sure your kids will be fine

mnnewbie111 · 21/03/2022 19:43

Wow my post made no sense.
