Hairdressers and tipping

Need some advice re tipping please. I’ve been going to the same hairdresser for a couple of years now, she works for herself and I go to her house. It would cost me about £140 (cut & dye) and then I’d tip a tenner on top and I get my hair done about every 3-4 months.

She has recently increased her prices by about £10 so it’s now going to cost £150 and that’s without tip...

What does everyone else do re tipping a hairdresser? My DH thinks it’s becoming excessive

Just trying to gauge general consensus of tipping and how much others do?

That's expensive considering it's not in a salon. My full head highlights plus cut (in a salon) costs around £65. I tip a few quid (or whatever change I have in my purse) but never as much as £10 or even £5 tbh

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 20/03/2022 21:41

I worked on the principal of 10%, but that’s another £15 on top, so it’s certainly getting very expensive.

SpikeySmooth · 20/03/2022 21:43

10% or round up to the nearest zero.

Same as restaurants, cabs...

I tip 3£

I pay £68 for highlights, cut and blow ( NW England)

People tip their hairdressers? Oh dear BlushBlush

UmmWhatThe · 20/03/2022 22:00

Thank you all. 10% is usually what I tip in restaurants unless SC is already added on. I’m London based and so this can be about 12.5%.
I tip a tenner although it is less than 10% because £150 was a nice round number but now it’s going to be £160+ for a haircut that was worth £140 a few months ago...

@Casheeeew I always have done in salons as a friend of mine who used to work in a high street salon was being paid a dismal hourly rate in comparison to what the salon was actually charging the customer, and so naturally I continued when I found this hairdresser but something does feel a little wrong about it I must admit.

If she's increasing her prices by as much as £10 in a home salon, she surely can't expect a tip on top of this!Seems very expensive and I would maybe still go but not tip anymore. She'll then get the message hopefully.

burnthur5t · 21/03/2022 12:56

You're paying her to do a job. No idea why she then needs a tip on top of that

NeedleNoodle3 · 21/03/2022 13:05

My haircut at a salon is £38 and I give £5 tip, I go every 7 weeks. In between that I get my fringe trimmed for free, I always offer another £5 but half the time my hairdresser won’t take it.
If I have a treatment or haircut by someone that works for themselves not in a salon then I never tip. I know there’s no logic to this as many hairdressers are self employed even though they work in a salon.
OP I’d probably tip nothing or a fiver.

coodawoodashooda · 21/03/2022 13:06

Id stop going.

Sloth66 · 21/03/2022 13:19

I used to tip, but the price went up £10 to £90 for cut and colour. I thought that was bad enough. I tip at Christmas, but that’s all.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 21/03/2022 13:22

I have never tipped my hairdresser, I pay £30- £40 for a cut and blow dry which takes about 30 minutes to do. I think £1 a minute is a big enough amount of money to pay and the salon should be able to pay their stylists a decent wage from that.

BooseysMom · 20/05/2022 12:11

I paid £15 for a child's cut for DS and even got a complimentary small bottle of wine!! I didn't tip and felt awful when I thought maybe I should have. Would anyone else tip if they got wine?
On the other hand I was looking for a new salon for myself and on their website it said come in for a complimentary consultation and cup of tea or two and I wasn't even offered a drink! I was rushed in and out. I think the wine wins every time!

TheCraicDealer · 20/05/2022 12:36

I give £2 or so which goes in the tip jar for the trainees who do the hair washes and brush the floor. My hairdresser is the owner's DD so I have no doubt she's on a fair wage.

I've never tipped my nail lady or the woman who does my eyebrows or anything who have a similar set up to your SE hairdresser. If she sets her own prices I wouldn't tip at all.

Sally872 · 20/05/2022 12:39

I pay £80 in a lovely salon. At home I would expect big discount. Appreciate London is more expensive but that does seem excessive. That said if it was the best hair colour/cut ever I would continue to pay £150 no tip.

Classica · 20/05/2022 12:41

I tip my hairdresser because she's really good and she doesn't own the salon. If I had my hair cut by a salon owner, or by a mobile hairdresser in your case (who doesn't have any overheads) I wouldn't tip.

JudgeRindersMinder · 20/05/2022 12:41

I don’t tip self employed people, they set their own pay rate so shouldn’t need tips to top it up

Evilista · 20/05/2022 12:42

I tip roughly 10% but don't go often, and do my colour at home

Evilista · 20/05/2022 12:43

I did used to get highlights by a home hairdresser and would tip about 10% then

DoorLion · 20/05/2022 12:48

I had my hair cut today at Toni and Guy. It was £85. I used to agonise about tipping hairdressers - sometimes did, sometimes didn't, never knew how much to give (was it derisory? Was it stupidly too much) or who to give it to (the hairdresser themselves? The receptionist to pass on?) or when or how (in cash? what if I am paying by card). Then I just decided never to do it, especially given my hairdresser probably earns way more than me anyway and to stop stressing about it and I feel much happier about everything!

Exactly this

Stabbitystabstab · 20/05/2022 12:56

I no longer tip.
I realised the people that were getting my tips earn more than me and often (especially with hairdressers) the service isn't exceptional.

MermaidSwimming · 20/05/2022 12:57

I've never tipped a hairdresser, it expensive enough to get my hair done without adding more on

Searchfornessie · 20/05/2022 13:01

Absolutely no need to tip a self employed hairdresser that works from their own home. You can chose to tip in a hairdressers to make up for the crap wages (I tip the person who washes my hair, for example).

Searchfornessie · 20/05/2022 13:02

This is exactly it! You don’t tip your window cleaner, you just pay them what they request to do the job they’ve done for you.
