Mum has covid with sudden confusion and memory loss

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar with a parent?

My mum tested positive for covid and week or so ago but has not been particularly unwell with it.
I don’t know all the details but earlier today she became muddled and confused, not knowing what was going on or recalling any recent memories.
She’s in hospital now with my dad who also has covid and my brother.

She’s late 60s so not elderly.

Docs haven’t mentioned a link to covid so not sure if it’s related- they called it transient global amnesia. They’re waiting for a scan currently, not sure what type or what it’s for.

I’ve never heard of this before, any knowledge anyone might have would be helpful, thanks!

Has she been tested for a UTI? They can cause confusion in older people.

Stegosaurusesrock · 20/03/2022 20:53

I came here to say the same - uti is most common, but it sounds like what I would have called delerium (apols if language has changed I've been out of care work for 8 years) Delerium can be scary but should be short lived as once infection is treated it goes away.

A friend of mine has had several episodes of transient global amnesia. It’s disorienting for yet and a bit scary, but nothing sinister has ever been found. I think there might be a link with migraines

DH had transient global amnesia after his first AZ Covid jab. It’s v scary but he recovered quite quickly, though was left with a small gap of memory for the few hours when it happened.

My FIL was super confused when he had covid.

BirdOnTheWire · 20/03/2022 21:02

I had covid last year and was confused, disoriented and couldn't think straight. It was quite alarming. I was pretty ill but made a full recovery.

A friend of mine had an episode of transient global amnesia. Her family thought she'd had a stroke as she was so disorientated. It was short lived though and she hasn't had another. The doctors thought she was very stressed and that was the cause.

BeanStew22 · 20/03/2022 21:14

OP - I don’t want to worry you, but a friend was telling me today about her relative who had an undiagnosed Covid infection (much younger, 40s), but had since had some neurological symptoms like confusion etc due to a bleed on the brain (less severe than a stroke)

Good that your mum is in hospital, the doctors will look into things but be persistent in you mr questions: hopefully it’s not that and just the Covid or a UTI

I am 40s and had lots of brain fog / silly confusion with Covid (like picking up orange juice not milk etc) - maybe it’s just a bigger version of that ?

My DM had transient global amnesia about 3 years ago. Diagnosis depends on it lasting only about 24 hours. In her case I reckon it was caused by stress - my DF has dementia. She’s been fine since.

JudyGemstone · 20/03/2022 21:26

Thanks - don’t believe it’s a UTI, no other signs of infection or anything. I thought that was more a thing with elderly people?

It’s a CT scan they’re sending her for.

Interesting that it could be linked to migraines. Haven’t found a lot of info on links to covid but lots of weird symptoms seem to be anecdotally at least.

friend said she had sudden confusion like that & HRT sorted it out

JudyGemstone · 20/03/2022 21:30

Yeah I wondered about a TIA but she doesn’t have any of the other symptoms

That’s good to hear, thanks

I had Covid in n January and am CEV. I was very forgetful indeed, forgot conversations that just happened, affected my whole mood.

Because I am CEV I was speaking to doctor on Covid ward and mentioned it and that I also was having mood swings, bit like major PMS.

She said they see confusion and mood swings very often, nothing to worry about.

MrsPsmalls · 20/03/2022 22:48

There usually aren't any other particular symptoms with a TIA.
