Neighbors and fence...

Please advise me

About 6 years ago, I had work done to my back garden. It was paved with huge borders filled with conifers, shrubs etc. I hated it so had it all dug out and lawned over. When the guy came to do it has asked who had put the science up as it wasn't secure. My neighbor had put it up some years previously And now when I think about it removed a hedge on my boundary without asking.

Anyway, garden was done, really pleased with it but fence was leaning as I live on a bank. The fence doesn't have concrete posts just wooden.

Neighbor comes straight round and complains. Back story is that they have complained before. The front garden trees are too big could I cut them as they can't see the road. We live in a very quiet residential street, my girls shouldn't be sledging when we were snowed in once, my back garden could look like theirs if I changed it, my daughter had friend round once when she turned 18, it was too loud. They thought I was a soft touch. As I type this I'm listening to their rock music through the walls.

I thought I had to stand up to them to stop their petty complaining so I wouldn't get into a discussion about the fence. The husband is quite intimidating and I'm a single woman. Anyway I stood my ground.

Relations have thawed slightly and he called in a couple of weeks ago to say he was gettting fence fixed. He would leave my garden looking exactly as it was. I didn't for one moment think he would be putting something in my garden! However he has placed a wooden beam thing across the front of the fence which is an eye sore.

I've tried to ignore it but I'm just so annoyed at their cheek and feel I should say something but it's not easy to face them on my own. What would you do?

im speaking from a victorian house point of view

Moody123 · 20/03/2022 18:49

Could you attach a long planter to it .. and then plant some nice flowers?
I don't think it looks too bad, I would have to cover it tho!

I can't see the picture either

DianaBarry5 · 20/03/2022 18:53

They have used shorter planks behind vertically to attach it to the fence

Well there is! You just can't see it! Grin

SeasonFinale · 20/03/2022 19:01

I can't see a picture but assume they have attached a brace to prevent the fence from falling down or being broken. As it is their fence they are allowed to attach what they like to it.

It shows on the app but not on the mobile site

Is the beam within your garden, or on their land?

DianaBarry5 · 20/03/2022 19:12

Seasonfinale

They aren't allowed to do anything they like to it on my land

dementedpixie · 20/03/2022 19:12

I'm assuming that's on OPs side

TheSpottedZebra · 20/03/2022 19:12

Blimey I think that looks fine! He's sunk wooden posts down hasn't he, then attached the horizontal posts. But actually it looks quite neat and careful, and it probably IS a problem fence for them.

I agree with 'pick your battles' and I'd ignore this. The colours of the wood will mellow soon but I love plants so I'd plant it up.

DianaBarry5 · 20/03/2022 19:14

I'm going to pick my battles. Thank you everyone for the advice. I think because they are CF usually I was annoyed. X

I agree with Zebra, it does look neat.

MoneyMoneyMoneyMustBefunny · 20/03/2022 19:32

I'm confused, I can see a pic from @dementedpixie but not @DianaBarry5.

Assuming that is the correct photo, it looks like an old fence?
The beam on the ground, surely that's on OPs land and not on the boundary?

OnaBegonia · 20/03/2022 19:33

It's not a beam its sleepers, quite common to place these along fence lines. I wouldn't bother staining, sleepers will weather and the fence isn't stained so will be more noticeable.

I took a screenshot from the app as the picture shows there but not on the mobile site
DianaBarry5 · 20/03/2022 19:53

Yes it's obviously over the boundary and on my land which I wouldn't get excited about if they were decent neighbors and hadn't complained about very petty stuff over the years

Your land? Cfers indeed.

Lineofconcepcion · 20/03/2022 20:07

@mathanxiety

Is that all they did to stabilize the fence? Is there anything on their side? What exactly is the purpose of the additional planks they added?

You could hire a power washer to wash your side of the fence and the cleaned up old wood would blend with the new planks.

You could also plant a flower border to hide it if you think it's unsightly.

No don't ever power wash wood. I cringe when I see people doing this. Wood is made up of both hard and soft materials. Power washing causes the softer wood to be damaged and washed away and although it still looks nice for a short period it will deteriorate quickly and cause water ingress causing rotting.
Lineofconcepcion · 20/03/2022 20:15

Re the position of the repair, it would be a good idea to drop a note in saying the wood is on my property and should be on yours, but I'm happy for you to leave it. But when it comes to a new fence at some point in the future, you will need to recall the boundary is where the fence is, not where the repair is iyswim. By you giving permission he cannot gain adverse possession (of a few inches, looks like 4-6?).

DianaBarry5 · 20/03/2022 20:32

Good idea thank you
