Anyone Tried Hello Fresh or Similar?

I keep seeing ads pop up for Hello Fresh & one was claiming you can save on supermarket prices plus have less waste. We waste an awful lot of food which we can’t really afford to do. Anyone tried & been happy with the results?

Just to add if money is tight then there’s often lots of 99p recipe books on kindle (you don’t need a kindle - you can get a free app on your phone) which you could use for meal planning. Sometimes Jack Monroe books are on there and they have v cheap recipes.

But who even needs recipe books any more? There's about a billion recipes on the internet.

I can't see how Hello Fresh would be a sensible choice if you're looking to save money because it's a really expensive way to buy food.

It would only live up to their claim that it was cheaper than the supermarket if your supermarket was Waitrose, Booths or the Co-op and you bought the most expensive herbs, spices and sauces and never used them again.

Another option if you don't already have a selection of spices in would be that The Spicery currently have their curry and taco legend kits on half price and for £16 you get a cookbook and four spice blends that can be used with meat, pulses and veg to make a wide selection of recipes.

You also need garlic and ginger, so if you can get the big packs from Tesco or Asda they cost nothing and last forever:

I use mindful chef and love it. Now I have a few of their recipe books that come in each box I’ve started buying the ingredients myself from Abel and Cole and making them separately. For us it’s good value as we eat better quality food and get far fewer take aways.

[quote Smurf1984]I’ve tried them both but Gousto is much better, the quality, choice of food and portion size is far superior! I have a discount code for 65% off your first box if you want to give them a go? 😊

I’ve tried every meal prep box going at this point Grin.

Much prefer Gousto to HF - I love the “Prepped in 10” ones, and I think Gousto does more interesting meals better (such as curries, Chinese meals, Persian) whereas HF was more classic fare. And better on flavourful veggie options too. Both getting better on reducing excess packaging but still some way to go.

Both are losing customers at the rate of knots at the moment! I work in supply chain and both are suffering a bit - so absolutely grab a discount to try.

Another 65% off from me if anyone still wants one.

We've used Gousto for a few years - absolute blessing during lockdown. DH's repertoire has gone from a pot noodle when I'm out to cooking four times per week! It's good, imaginative recipes and service is pretty reliable. Any issues are resolved quickly.

Now trying Mindful Chef. It's significantly more costly than Gousto but the quality and range is much better. For example, rather than basa or salmon fillets for most of the fish dishes, Mindful chef offers hake, cod, trout etc. All the chicken is free range. The use by dates are longer than Gousto's. Gousto is good, we're finding Mindful Chef is better but we wouldn't do 4 meals each week from them.

Enjoy your Gousto!

Oooo fantastic! I hope you enjoy it, the boxes have definitely made my life easier and the codes make it very worth while! 😊

MajorCarolDanvers · 20/03/2022 19:16

We get hello fresh once every 4-6 weeks

We do it as a way of refreshing what we eat and not getting into a rut. I really like it. Especially the vegetarian recipes.

We’ve used Mindful Chef and have been very impressed (with welcome discount voucher). The food has been of good quality and there’s plenty of it. It’s all arrived fresh and has lasted well. An added bonus is that dh and ds loves cooking the meals!

tothefareast80 · 20/03/2022 19:25

We use Mindful Chef and very happy so far. Same issues as many have mentioned re Hello Fresh but haven't tried Gousto. Mindful Chef recipes are really varied, don't rely on things like wedges for make a meal and are always very flavourful. Not the cheapest option but I'm two months in and very happy so far

29ac · 20/03/2022 19:30

Gousto much better than hello fresh. We love it as gives a nice variety of foods, we don’t waste anything and is all portion controlled.

crochetcrazy1978 · 20/03/2022 20:26

I've had Gousto for the last year and love it. It's made my meals so much more varied and in all that time I think I've only had 1 meal I didn't enjoy. I freeze the meat/fish when it arrives and that way I can stretch the box over the whole week

SaintVal · 20/03/2022 20:40

I like Simply Cook because you buy your own main ingredients (which I prefer as I like to choose my own meat and veg) and they supply the pastes, spices, marinades and you get a recipe card.

I liked the recipes on Mindful Chef but on one order I had the chicken smelt really bad and it put me off after that!

Thatsplentyjack · 20/03/2022 20:45

We tried hello fresh after I had dd. Thought it would be convenient. Well it was for me because dp did all the cooking 🤣. I tried one of the recipes and honestly there was so many steps I just felt stressed, but then I always feel like that following a recipe. Can't take the instructions in and have to read it over and over again, so maybe that was just me.

dementedma · 20/03/2022 20:47

Too much packaging and fiddly sachets of stuff. We tried it but went back to doing our own thing
