Would you rather?

Would you rather:

  • take an opportunity to work within a family business (my parents run the business)

Or

  • stay within a massively corporate company (not massively appreciated but do not have a lot of stress)

Due back on maternity leave in June 2023 so I have a while to decide. I know what I am leaning towards but would be nice to see what others may think if you had the choice? Thank you ...

Watching the family running orange county choppers, basically a family run business making chopper motorbikes, and yes I'm guessing some of the drama is likely added for ratings on the show, but overall the stresses must take their toll and it's better to have peace with the family unit, rather than end up with differences of perspectives, to put it mildly.

GirlMum93 · 20/03/2022 01:48

Thanks I think I've heard of that

If it was my family I'd stay with the corporate business because we'd kill each other but I have heard tales of families that get along in which case of join the family business,

Flowersandwine12 · 20/03/2022 06:02

How successful is/could the family business be and is it something that you really want to do? What position would you hold and would it give you the freedom to develop parts of the business that really interest you or would you just be taking orders from family members which could cause friction? Do you have the experience to do what you’d do in the business well or would you be out your depth and possibly face resentment from employees that are more experienced but won’t progress because management positions will be given to family not the best employees.
It’s impossible to say.

For be, at this stage of life and experience a family business would be interesting, but 15 years ago it wouldn’t have been the right choice.

It really depends. Some family businesses are really successful, with good pay and benefits plus the flexibility and understanding that you're likely to need as a parent of a baby for sick days etc.

But others may barely scrape a living and expect you to always be working for not even NMW or the sorts of annual, sick and maternity leave entitlememt that large businesses offer, even if it's the statutory minimum.

Or the corporate could be the type who think they own you 24/7 and require long hours, travel and compulsory away days/team building events etc.

Without specific detail as to how they compare, no-one can say.

More questions than answers!

Depends on lots of things, none of which you've told us

GirlMum93 · 20/03/2022 10:05

@ChairCareOh

Which has the best pay and benefits? Specifically, which has the best pension, and if you planned kids, which has the best maternity package and most flexible working arrangements?

I would probably assume the corporate is better for all of those things. I would also prefer to keep work and family separate.

Thank you. Family business is more money, a lot more flexibility and longer term prospects and will likely be more looked after.

Although more stress and a lot more that will keep me up at night however chance to work for family run business and not under someone who probably doesn't really know I exist. Although very nervous to make that move from corporate ...

The corporate company I work for is within a similar industry to our family business. Family business let year turned over 600+k.

So they are a lot busier with not enough office people. Currently my parents and a site manager and that's it. Parents want to retire.

It's really difficult. Part of me feels obliged as I would like to release it from my parents. We want to keep the business within family.

Thank you so much everyone for comments
