Do you have a go at DIY tasks or get someone in

I like to think I'm fairly practical but there are some things I've just never done. I'm afraid I just left it all to DH for 30 years.

I need some new fence panels fitting. It should be straightforward, the posts are sound, but the panels are a nonstandard size so will need cutting down. .

I could have a go, save some money and learn something, but it will take me far longer than it should, I don't have a suitable electric saw, if it's a disaster I'll have wasted the panels. I'm also not sure if I'll be able to lift them into place on my own so I'll need to find some help.

Or I know handyman who can probably do it in a couple of hours, although he's all booked for a few weeks.

WWYD?

Fence panels I would get the handyman.

I do have a go at a lot of things (YouTube tutorials are brilliant) I draw the line at anything that would require buying expensive equipment to do it.
I’ve learnt how to replace an oven element, fit a pane of glass in a shed & some basic plumbing stuff all with the help of Google

I'd pay someone to do it properly rather than try myself and probably make an arse of it, I hate DIY though.

Yes I replaced my own toilet flush recently and was ridiculously pleased with myself Grin Also redid the sealant round a window. You'd never mistake it for a professional job, but it looks OK and I've learned some things for next time..

I'd get the handyman. I can do a lot of things but practical stuff is somehow beyond me. I built a billy bookcase inside out last time I tried...

DropYourSword · 19/03/2022 13:00

Depends what it is. I have replaced the kitchen tap and laid laminate flooring, but for a fence I'd get someone in!

megletthesecond · 19/03/2022 13:01

I pay a handyman. I don't have the time to fiddle around trying to do it myself.

Earlydancing · 19/03/2022 13:01

I do loads of DIY. Fitted my own kitchen and wardrobes. But fence panels are heavy and awkward to move around, particularly if there's even a slight breeze. I've never been able to put in regular sized bought panels on my own, even on a still day.

megletthesecond · 19/03/2022 13:02

Oh, I can build ikea stuff. I'm good at that.

MajesticElephant · 19/03/2022 13:04

I say go for it! You already know the worst outcome
and if your ok with with then why not?!

thereisonlyoneofme · 19/03/2022 14:29

Ive only just bought myself an electric drill, and having problems working out how to use it, so I tend to get a handyman in for anything other than painting !

I give pretty much anything a go - changed a socket in the wall including the metal box bit, installed lighting, plumbed the dishwasher including all new waste pipes for the sink, have done fencing and completely reconfigured our kitchen too. How likely are you to mess up measuring and cutting a straight line? I bought a circular saw from argos for not much money, under 50 and its very easy to use

ouch321 · 19/03/2022 15:35

I would not have a clue.

And if I did give a go it would prob be done badly and look crap and then it would bug me so much I'd have to get someone out...
