Brighton / Whitstable / ? tomorrow

First taste of spring is inspiring me to escape London for the day. Just feel a need to have some headspace, look at the sea, bit of mooching around somewhere different with independent shops etc.

So am I best heading for a bit more bustle in Brighton (pros, slighter shorted distance, cons maybe too busy?), or Whitstable (bit quieter?). Have never been to either, but both places I want to visit. So any recommendations/inputs welcome!

Or other suggestions, if within couple hours if London by train :)

Whitstable is nice, but unlikely to be especially quiet on a sunny Spring Saturday? It's very walkable from the station & quaint rather than glamourous.

Might not be a good idea to do Brighton tomorrow! There’s a very large slow moving abnormal load travelling from shoreham to somewhere in East Sussex and you might be affected by road closures or people finding alternative routes around closures.

Whitstable is lovely but likely very busy. We went in January 2020 and it was really busy. What about Margate or Southend? Who can resist the longest pleasure pier in the world😻

Southend is one of my favourite places, though it’s a small fan club🤣 The stroll along the pier and then on to Leigh on Sea is worth it though, it’s really rather lovely and underrated imo.

Thank you for the input and suggestions! I suppose by bustle of Brighton I was thinking more the size of Brighton. Will investigate Margate!

May end up flipping a coin!

If you’re going by train go to Brighton, Whitstable is nice but pretty small, Margate - nice beach but not enough of anything else to justify the journey.

Rochester? Easy train access, lovely high street and historic

Visit Southend-on-sea, our newest city! Plenty of beaches, walk to the end of the pier, cliff walks etc. Old Leigh for riverside drinks and food and sunsets. Wherever you decide, have a lovely day!

Folkestone is lovely and high speed train I think.

Lifeispassingby · 18/03/2022 22:48

Whitstable will be beautiful tomorrow but b busy by mid/late morning (I live there so will walk rather than drive!)

Whitstable is always lovely.... lived very near for many years. If you were feeling energetic you could do the walk from there to Herne Bay along the sea front. Stop in the way in Tankerton where there are some nice cafes.

Broadstairs and Ramsgate are great for the beach but the towns aren't great. Broadstairs is smaller and the station is a 10-15 min walk to the beach.

Folkestone is another option.... the town centre isn't much but the artists Quarter, and the seafront are quite nice. The Leas is also a nice walk with lots of gardens and old buildings.

Brighton I don't know as well as have only been a few times. I'm sure it will be horrendously busy... but you have the Lanes to get lost in which is something I personally enjoy.

Go to Deal, not much of a town but some good walking on the beach (pebbly) , a lovely cafe on the pier, a brilliant butcher and good fish and chips. And a castle.

viques · 19/03/2022 01:30

Or Rye, though you would have to breathe very deeply for a bit of ozone.

StringFellow · 19/03/2022 01:40

Whitstable lovely , but depends on what you like? Whitstable you can walk far down the beach towards Herne Bay but there isn’t loads and loads in terms of shops/entertainment, which is perfect for me but maybe not for others! The train can also be very very busy on popular weekend days, and parking a nightmare

Don't know what you decided to do @GlitteringFeeling but I'd do Brighton over Whitstable any day. And I lived in Whitstable for many years until very recently.

Brighton has much more to offer in every way IMO.
