Does anyone have any experience with British Theatre Academy?

Are they legit? I've seen something on Facebook offering kids the chance to audition to be in a show they are putting on, it says it is free to audition and free to perform (so no rehearsal fees), looking deeper it looks like it's probably to hook you in to paying for ongoing classes with them, but I'm still a bit dubious. Has anyone come across them before?

I am a parent who have two children that have been attending BTA for the last 7 years and love it!

I just want to state this post is without any agenda apart from to make all concerned aware of what you and your child is getting into when participating in BTA which I fully appreciate may not be for every child or parent.

It is important to emphasis from the outset that BTA is a genuine Theatre School and provides the highest quality training in the Musical Theatre industry outside of Higher Education (Drama School and University) that we have come across and we have lived in several locations across the UK. This is clearly evidenced by the amount of kids that go onto pursue Musical Theatre as a profession through Drama School/University and perform in professional productions.

Being someone from the same generation as Matthew and many of the creatives and previously a semi professional musician I fully appreciate that BTA like many other theatre schools have to be based on discipline, resilience and dedication, as well as tonnes of positivity and enjoyment to achieve anything worthwhile! That is not to say that the kids are not looked after properly In fact I believe it is quite the opposite the support the kids receive through a network of parent and professional chaperones as well as all the creatives (including the much maligned Matthew!) Is second to none.

BTA has certainly given my kids (and I believe the majority) the sense of belonging alongside the need to work hard as part of a team and take the 'rough with the smooth' to achieve worthwhile things which I fully support as this is real life and certainly is the case in the Musical Theatre Industry in my view.

If I had half the talent that some of the kids at BTA have and the way it is nurtured I would be very happy indeed.

Wow. I thought I would take a moment to address the previous comments after my previous post.
My daughter and I absolutely value honesty and constructive feedback, it’s one of the reasons we appreciated and stayed with BTA over the years and it hasnt been all bad, my daughter had many happy years.
However, there is a clear difference between offering professional guidance and shutting someone down after I simply educated Matthew about my daughter’s disabilities. I provided evidence that I had notified BTA from the start that my daughter is a type 1 diabetic, and later shared proof of her ADHD diagnosis as he stated I did not notify them and therefore she would not insured if anything was to happen.
That crosses a line. Dismissing a parent for clarifying essential disability information especially after Matthew claimed she is “not disabled” is not “honesty”, it is unacceptable. If growth is truly the goal, then respecting and listening to the information we provide, particularly regarding disabilities, must be part of that commitment and properly documented.
With respect, the portrayal of BTA as consistently nurturing and safeguarding does not reflect our experience. Despite claims that all students are protected, my disabled child was mistreated by certain creatives in positions of power during a very vulnerable time in her life (her mother being diagnosed with cancer).

Communication from safeguarding staff was nonexistent, and the support described was simply not provided to us. While some staff and parents may act diligently, my experience demonstrates that the safety and well-being of all students were not consistently upheld.
Despite the mistreatment she faced, my daughter still delivered an amazing performance. Yet being denied the opportunity to participate in other promised shows, despite doing nothing wrong in tech this was completely disgraceful. Making a child with ADHD sit in Bob Hope Theatre in tech for six hours (in silent and in hope that she could still do the other shows, if she was on her best behaviour) watching someone else perform her role, and the creative (katy) knowing full well she would not be allowing her to take part in the other shows, was nothing short of cruel. If she wasnt that good why did BTA have her on their tiktok account for so long, getting over 15k likes shows how amazing she really was and when I made a comment to ask them to remove her tiktok after what they did. BTA deleted and block me. AGAIN DISGRACEFUL!
After four years at the academy, multiple main roles, and countless hours of commitment, I expected far better. Instead, Matthew who barely knows my child and has no understanding of her circumstances treated us with complete disrespect. This is not just my experience, I have heard similar accounts from several parents over the years who ultimately left BTA because of being unfairly treated. If any parent doubts what I’ve shared, I have documented emails clearly showing how my child and I were mistreated and happy to share.

Now I am done wasting my time on this. Being ill has taught me that life is far too short to give energy to cruel, vile people. And through this experience, I have also shown my daughter that not everyone in positions of authority will treat you with fairness or respect, no matter how hard you try to impress or go above and beyond to help them.

Finally its truly funny how many comments appeared after mine, clearly prompted and for anyone who wishes to come at me for speaking my truth. Tell someone who cares. Have a wonderful night.

Hi all,

We are posting on behalf of The British Theatre Academy, who wish to share the following response:

"We are sorry you had such negative experiences with us and we are certainly not a cult. I think it's a difficult time we are in; at BTA we lead with open and honest feedback, any "name calling" that you describe would have absolutely been done to lighten any situation and jest and perhaps it's something we can think about moving forward for those who are less familiar with our staff. We are never mean, not do we shout, it's just not how we operate and we are sincerely sorry that it felt that way to you. In terms of opinions regarding agencies or colleges we only offer our individual opinions from our personal and professional experiences in order to support and protect our members. All our guidance and teaching style come from a place of passion and honesty. It does not excuse creating negative environments and we will certainly look into your experience and discuss it with the team to ensure similar experiences do not happen again. We have many happy members and continue to blossom at a time where theatre and acceptance is needed more than ever. We are vigilant to mental health and our members well being at all times.

Best Wishes From The Team at BTA"
