Air fryers

liveforsummer · 17/03/2022 18:43

Possibly like others, I want to stop using my oven completely. Looking for recommendations on air fryers or multi cookers I don't have loads of space to have loads of gadgets. I want to be able to make roasts as well as freezer food, jacket potatoes, bacon, would be nice to be able to do both potatoes and meat if that's possible. Bonus points for links Smile

This thread is a bit old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for air fryers, we’ve recently updated our best air fryer page with loads of great versatile options, as rated by real Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

@Happymiraclemorning that was my original choice but now I've been lured by the all singing and dancing ones that do all the other stuff too.

I bought the instapot vortex a few days ago

Current best price is £99 at Argos (link below)

I like it a lot: a good size for chips or similar for 4 people, a full meal for 2, can put a single person pizza (like a pizette or one of the pizza express ones in too).

It’s about 28 cm wide/25 deep/30 high

It air fries, bakes, roasts & grills. V easy to use: so far I have made wedges, bake a pizza, reheat a pizza. Plan to bake cookies, do a roast & a crumble this week

So far, love it. Easy/intuitive to use, cuts cooking time down quite a bit (maybe half?). Looks good & easy to clean. Handily beeps when it’s time to put in/turn/take out food

1 downside: it’s noisy (sounds like a fan), but less so than eg a tumble drier. Kind of a positive for me as I won’t forget it’s on Smile

@liveforsummer

The ninja actually seems to be on offer some places too. I'm just concerned I'd still need my oven for roast potatoes. Maybe you could do both together though. It's only me and 2 dc so a smaller chicken is ok
I do the chicken earlier in the day then do the roasties when I'm cooking the dinner, it makes amazing Yorkshire puddings too.

@SunflowerSmith how do you do the Yorkshires please

sophienelisse · 18/03/2022 18:59

Op you can do the roasties in the ninja. I am going to try the roast function this weekend to see if it's better than the air fryer ones I have been doing

SunflowerSmith · 18/03/2022 19:14
@SunflowerSmith how do you do the Yorkshires please
100ml milk
100g plain flour
2 eggs
Pinch of salt

Whisk it together until there are lots of air bubbles and put the mixture in the fridge, I usually leave it a few hours.
When I'm ready to cook them I heat the oil in the muffin tins for 10 minutes, add the mix and Air Fry on 200 for 10-12 minutes.

sophienelisse · 18/03/2022 19:27

Thank you I'm off to google ninja muffin tins Wink

@Sluj

Does any of it go in a dishwasher?
A lot of them have dishwasher safe baskets.

However, ours is too big to go in the top shelf of our dishwasher, which is where it says it should go. It might fit in different dishwashers because we have a third tray right at the top of our DW so restricts headroom on the main top tray, but it might fit with some rearranging of the shelves.

Or it's really easy to handwash, and I'm as lazy as they come in that respect, everything goes in our dishwasher or it doesn't get washed/used generally. But thinking about it, the removeable shelf could go in the DW and the main basket be washed by hand, and just needing a wipe out after soaking.

We have the cheapest one from Costco. It's currently on offer on the website and I think you can buy it without being a member, but it's slightly cheaper in the shop, maybe about £47.

I'm pretty impressed with it, it's great for us but there's only two of us and DP works away or gets fed at work quite a bit so I'm often just doing something for me. But you can just about get something like breaded fish and oven chips for two in it if you use the extra shelf.

Pommelegible · 19/03/2022 07:13

Sorry to hijack.
If we’re a family of 6 is there any point in getting an air fryer? Can you fit a whole bag of chips and 6 fish fillets in any of them? I’m guessing I’d still need the main oven for the Sunday roast? Those are the main things the oven gets used for in our house, most other meals are done on hob or in instant pot.

@liveforsummer

Op if you are inretested I am doing beef in the ninja today. I have watched an American video on you tube and it says to Broile which I think means grill. That is what I am going to do anyway.

I've also done carrot and swede, broccoli, cauliflower in there and baby boiled potatoes which I am now air frying with a little bit of garlic butter coating them.

I'm going to make the gravy and attempt a jus with the sauté function.

My kitchen is spotless but I do feel like I have had to be in and out looking at the timer and to turn potatoes. However no pans to clean Grin

insancerre · 20/03/2022 12:38

I have the 14 in 1 ninja and have cooked a whole chicken in it with potatoes and veg
I mostly use it to airfry home made chips
I did use the slow cooker for a lamb curry but Dh said it wasn’t as tender as the old slow cooker, so I will leave it longer next time

liveforsummer · 23/03/2022 06:37

Have bitten the bullet and ordered the 14 in 1. Will need to rearrange the kitchen counters a bit but hopefully this will save me time on both cooking and washing up and money on electric and hot water. Fingers crossed. Meal ideas now welcome 😊

I love nine, cost co

The only thing that didn't work for me was. Roast chicken but that could have been the way I did it.
I use mine all the time!

crispmidnightpeace · 23/03/2022 07:43

That's interesting. Why are people looking to stop using their oven completely? Is it your aim to get rid of the oven and would you still have a stovetop?

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 23/03/2022 08:48

Is the theory that they use less energy, perhaps? I've tried to look into these and ended up confused, so these answers are helpful, thank you! My problem (?) is I'm vegan, and although there are only the two of us I cook double and either freeze or we have it the next night because of my health.
Can these things cope with a main, i.e. anything that will go with potatoes, and the potatoes together? Maybe a roast-veg dish that you have chips with; wouldn't you then end up needing to use it for each thing, which then uses at least the same amount of energy? Anyone else use it for more veg-based dishes, please? thank you x

liveforsummer · 23/03/2022 15:59

They use less energy they also cook in a fraction of the time so are on using power for less time. Same with the pressure cooker function - far quicker. My oven door also doesn't close properly so loses loads of heat that way. You can see the steam on colder days. I do aim to stop using it all together
