"we’re limited as to what we can tell you about this person”

If the police, the local authority and a local politician all say "we’re limited as to what we can tell you about this person” when I haven’t even asked anything about this person, just for help in dealing with a neighbour situation – what does it lead you to think?

🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 that's what Id take it as

Duracellbunnywannabe · 17/03/2022 12:36

They are know to the police and not in a positive way.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 17/03/2022 12:36

That knowledge of their true identity and whereabouts is restricted information, so possibly that they are either part of a witness protection scheme or are being assisted in avoiding someone who might be a danger to them or their children.

dudsville · 17/03/2022 12:37

It's a statement of confidentiality. There may be more behind it, but it's also a common statement.

Picklerickflag · 17/03/2022 12:38

What kind of help are you asking for? Are you trying to get your annoying neighbour kicked out?

IncompleteSenten · 17/03/2022 12:39

They're telling you there's some serious shit they aren't allowed to tell you.

dick27 · 17/03/2022 12:39

@picklerickflag no, not trying to get them kicked out

^ there are far better ways to give factual information about the limits of confidentiality. This is what I'd tell someone in order to warn them of trouble without saying anything in particular.

@Duracellbunnywannabe

Not always the case - it means your not entitled to know details about that person. It doesn’t make them a criminal. They may be subject to protection or other restrictions of a sensitive nature. You can’t instantly jump to the conclusion it’s in a negative way.
RealBecca · 17/03/2022 13:08

Id take it that you have no legal right to ask for the information you're asking for. I.e. that you have o legal right to know so they cant tell you anything about them.

Arent there various laws like Sarah's law and Claire's law for violence and sexual abuse?

MrsMinge · 17/03/2022 13:09

So you asked for general advice & this was the response?
My interruption would be 'if you were my family I'd advice you to move'
I wouldn't dig any deeper

Why do you think a politician would know anything about them?

What do you want to know that you think they should be telling you?

deadlanguage · 17/03/2022 13:29

I’d think they meant you aren’t eligible to be told information about them - ie not a next of kin.

dick27 · 17/03/2022 14:46

To reiterate, I did not ask for information about them. In fact in 2 of the 3 cases I explicitly said I did not want to know anything about them, I just wanted help with a specific situation. The response has been 3 variations on "we’re limited as to what we can tell you about this person” which was NOT what I had asked. It has made me very suspicious.

NinjaQueen · 17/03/2022 14:50

I would immediately expect the are on the sex offender register.

I would probably be wrong but it seems very much that's they are telling you there is something to tell about the person but they are limited in how much they can share.

I am very cynical though and it probably means nothing of the sort.

Deathraystare · 17/03/2022 15:28

Not necessarily anything wrong. They just dont give out too much info. Same as at hospitals.

2bazookas · 17/03/2022 15:30

"This person is well known to police and carries a big red flag. On your marks, get set, RUN".

sweetbellyhigh · 17/03/2022 15:33

Maybe they're in witness protection or under surveillance? Recently released from prison or new identity?

But can police/council/politicians actually tell you anything about anyone? 🤔

LizDoingTheCanCan · 17/03/2022 15:35

They're limited as to what they can tell you about any individual. What they are saying is, there are laws around confidentiality.

TheRealityCheque · 17/03/2022 15:57

YABU for asking such a ridiculous question without any useful information.

What exactly was the specific situation you wanted help with and what specifically did you ask?

I'm confused if you haven't even asked as to why your interested

What exactly is the situation

Farahilda · 17/03/2022 16:09

If it was someone who had their true identity suppressed, the police would not have answered in those terms.

As they have gone beyond your actual enquiry, I would very much take this as a warning

MermaidEyes · 17/03/2022 16:23

Is this something to do with a business rather than a person, as otherwise I can't see why you would be asking a politician?

Champagneforeveryone · 17/03/2022 16:45

A lot of these responses seem a little over dramatic. This is a line I use all the time in work and never means anything more than GDPR rules.

Major agencies like you've mentioned are extremely hot on GDPR and you'd be amazed what an infinitesimally small amount of information can legitimately be given out about someone.

It's a huge leap to assume that someone has a nefarious background just because of a statement like this.
