Supermarkets in central Barcelona?

implantreplace · 17/03/2022 09:30

Would like to save where I can on holiday - so planning on eating at the apartment quite a bit

Are their supermarkets in central Barcelona or generally on the outskirts and more dining establishments in the centre?

Thanks

Barcelona is vast and you're not going to want to travel far with shopping.

If you look on Google maps and search for supermarkets near your apartment, it will show you supermarkets and you can use streetview to see if they look like a decent supermarket, or just a tatty convenience store. Or look for the best looking supermarkets and pick accommodation close by if you haven't booked yet.

Eating out at lunchtime can be significantly cheaper than in the evening.

Don't buy anything on Las Ramblas.

I stayed in La Barceloneta which was fairly central (was able to walk everywhere) and there were a fair few supermarkets around our apartment, which I imagine is similar for all the neighbourhoods there.

I adored Barcelona, enjoy OP!

We just came back from a short break there, we noticed that therewere lots of smaller ‘corner shop’ type places that had beautiful displays of fruit and veg for sale. Lots of bakeries but yes get away from las ramblas for shopping even though the market is fascinating and very tempting. We also found tapas food very reasonably priced.

Pre covid so might not be the same now we found lots of little supermarkets in side streets where you can buy meats, cheeses, breads etc for light meals that you don't need to cook and lovely fresh orange juice

Great news

There is an Aldi right in the centre of born

But honestly.
Breakfast coffee and a croissant €2 etc

You can eat out cheaply you are in holiday!

The big markets are definitely worth a look and as well as produce stalls will be a good place to buy ready cooked food for lunch.

You'll make life easier if you take a wheelie case to double up as a shopping trolley to channel yet another TikTokker who seems to think that they've invented something that people have been doing for decades but has been less popular recently so relatively unknown amongst younger people.

We stayed very close to La Sagrada Familia and there was a little supermarket across the road (along with a fab cafe) and then we stumbled across a large supermarket just a block away. We stayed for 5 days when ds was 8, and didn't struggle to find food at all, to eat out or cook in our apartment.

There’s an El Corte Ingles just by the Placa de Catalunya. From memory I think they have quite a big supermarket in the basement.

There is a big supermarket on Las Ramblas, a Carrefor possibly, near the top on the right as you’re walking down from Catalonia Square. We always stock up there when we stay in Barcelona.

Thank you all
Mumsnet is brilliant

Quick question to confirm
If fully vaccinated I won’t need to show pass? No testing either side required?

Placemarking. I live in a street off la Rambla.

Changednamesorry · 17/03/2022 16:11

I will PM you shortly

maddy68 · 17/03/2022 17:36

No covid passes now in Spain
Just need your jabs etc I enter the country. That's it. Only restrictions are masks on public transport and inside public areas unless eating or drinking
So basically when you walk into a restaurant you need to wear it but take it off when seated. Out back on to go to the loo.

Nightwithhertrainofstars · 17/03/2022 17:40

Yes, the Carrefour mentioned by PP will be your best bet. Most other supermarkets in the old town/Raval will be more like corner shops with very limited range and very pricey. Carrefour is very reasonably priced and is quite big for a supermarket in the centre. It's on two floors.

Thank you all
So helpful
And the poster that pm-Ed, i have responded

Quick question - what kind of clothing to pack? Is it similar to here at the moment (south east - mild and sunny), so even though similar temps… feels colder or windier?

I'd say bring a medium weight jacket. You probably don't need a full-on winter coat or hat or scarf or anything. I'd bring long sleeve/full leg covering garments and closed-toe shoes. With that and a medium jacket you should be fine. It's been really peculiar weather for weeks because of the dust cloud or whatever it is that has also affected the UK. So it's been mostly overcast for weeks with spells of rain which is very unusual here. I can guarantee it'll feel milder than the SE of England. Have a great time!

thisplaceisweird · 25/03/2022 19:35

There's a Carrefour express on las ramblas (basically like Tesco express) prices are no different to rest of Spain, Carrefour has a good selection.

You are right, no testing needed, you'll need to complete a form to get into Spain (www.spth.gob.es/) but not to return. Some restaurants and museums will want to scan your qr code and you'll need to wear a mask indoor.

thisplaceisweird · 25/03/2022 19:37

"Catalonia Square" that's the most anglicised thing I've ever heard!!! How hard is it to say Plaça Catalunya???

Lunificent · 25/03/2022 19:49

El Corte Ingles (department store) has a supermarket in the basement. It’s at the top of Las Ramblas.

Shopgirl1 · 25/03/2022 19:54

There is a carrefour nearby, as well as a carrefour express.
There are also a few branches of Dia nearby, a very cheap supermarket I used to frequent very often as a student in Spain.
