London Day Out

Question10 · 16/03/2022 22:21

I have an impromptu day to myself in London and wondered what would you do if you had a day there? I’m thinking specific places … not just generic suggestions like “museum” etc …
I don’t like to aimlessly walk around London. I prefer an itinerary. Any help would be greatly received.

Also, has anyone been to the British Library? I think I’m interested in visiting there!

And where is good for shopping? Not Oxford Street

For just shopping Westfield at White city is the size of a small country, has every high street chain & quite a good selection of places for lunch.

For museums I love the V&A or the museum of London (check if that is still open, it’s moving but not sure when)

NuffSaidSam · 16/03/2022 22:35

I'd do a walking tour of some kind.
See a show.
NHM for the Wildlife Photography exhibition
Automation museum

You could do V&A, have a stroll down to Knightsbridge to look at Harrods & Harvey Nicks, followed by a quick but to Sloane Square/kings Road for more reasonable shops

Arcadia · 16/03/2022 22:37

Eat and shop at Borough market, walk along South Bank and visit Tate Modern?

nancy75 · 16/03/2022 22:38

Ooh yes the Wildlife photography exhibition is on now, that’s always good

Question10 · 16/03/2022 22:39

These are great suggestions!! Thank you 😊

If you’re interested in art:

Gainsborough’s Blue Boy is back at the National Gallery for the first time in a hundred years until May I think (free) - lots of other good stuff there as well

Van Gogh’s self portraits are on at the Courtauld (ticketed - not sure about availability)

British Library is good - some free exhibitions and some where you have to pay as well. Bronte manuscripts, Angela Carter, some Beatles stuff all free if you’re interested - I went this weekend Smile

Thank you 🙏🏻

Evening - Theatre / Leicester Square cinema / other show.

Day - you need to decide whether you want to shop or sight see, and if the latter whether you want historic sights - Tower of London, St. Paul's, Westminster Abbey, etc. - or culture - National Gallery, Somerset House (Van Gogh exhibition), Tate, British Museum, etc.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 16/03/2022 22:59

I always need to pop into the National for the Impressionists.

And the British Library is great.

And Westminster Abbey.

Fizzywinegum · 16/03/2022 22:59

Also if you go to British Library, Coal Drops Yard just behind Kings Cross Station looks interesting for restaurants and shops

Fizzywinegum · 16/03/2022 23:01

I need to go back to London again Grin

Question10 · 16/03/2022 23:15

This is great. Thank you all! Anyone know a nice place to have lunch near NHM?

Lots of restaurants around south Ken station - what kind of thing do you like?
We tried a newish one this week, it’s a little French restaurant that does chicken (not kfc style!) called cocotte

Question10 · 17/03/2022 07:31

Thanks 😊

Covent Garden. Long Acre is great for shopping, have lunch on the Piazza and you’ve got the London Transport Museum which is actually very interesting.
