Convinced i have gestational diabetes but results say no

32 weeks pregnant I've had increased thirst, glucose +3 in urine on one occasion at clinic and was referred for test. At home I tested glucose +2 twice and decided rather than wait for the 2 week test and do nothing to change my diet immediately taking advice from nhs and gestational diabetes UK. I then ordered my own blood glucose monitor and have managed to control blood sugars sticking to the diet plan. My fasting readings remain high at around 6/7 each morning. Anyway today I went for test and was convinced I would be told I'd have it. However both fasting and post 2 hour test showed I'm negative. When I got home I decided to have normal diet and had 2 brown toast for lunch, a banana and a wee mini egg. 2 hours later my blood recording was sitting at 8 and despite raising this I've been told this is normal and just to keep an eye. Has anyone else experienced higher blood glucose montoring without having gestational diabetes? I feel like I'm going insane.i have all the classic symptoms but I recognise this could be hormones too.

A GP told me that glucose in urine when pregnant doesn’t always mean GD
Pregnancy: Up to half of women have glucose in their urine at some time during pregnancy

Are you washing your hands before using the lancet & wiping the first drop of blood away before using the monitor?

Olahaha2021 · 16/03/2022 17:55

Thanks for your response @3001signon but I am being extra vigilant with same.

I totally understand you being vigilant, I was only trying to reassure you that it could just be normal. The venous blood test will be accurate so try not to worry too much but, are you wiping the first drop of blood away or testing that?

The rationale for wiping away the first drop of blood is that the alcohol in the prep pad, and consequently on the fingertip, may alter values

And are you squeezing to get the testing drop?

In general, guidelines advise against squeezing the finger too hard to get a blood drop because it may distort blood sugar readings

It could be normal and whilst I appreciate the point about the blood etc with the amount of glucose in urine on those 3 occasions plus the symptoms I'm experiencing I'm just shocked that there is not anything else going on but thanks @3001signon. I do appreciate your response.

Had +3 glucose in my urine for the last 3 months of pregnancy. GTT was normal though. Apparently it’s not uncommon.

MatureStudentToBeMaybe · 16/03/2022 18:25

Have they told you the numbers from your gtt? Previously I have been given the all clear only to be told I did have it when someone else checked. This was with a fasting level of 8 so not borderline!

Also, if you follow the diet before the gtt you can bring down your fasting number so it is not detected.

RavenclawsRoar · 16/03/2022 18:32

I had +3 glucose a few times with dc2 yet the GTT came back clear. Dc3 I was always fine with the urine dip, yet was diagnosed as having GD following the GTT!! I'd just low carb and low sugar as much as you can. It won't hurt even if you don't have it. I'd say your readings are high - my fasting finger prick test had to be under 5.3 and then I had to stay under 7.8 after food (an hour after I think) for the rest of the day. I stayed diet controlled but it was bloody hard work and I was starving most of the time! Do-able though.

JeanFinch · 16/03/2022 18:34

Sounds annoying because that does seem to indicate it and actually sounds exactly like my measurements when i had it.
I managed mine by diet if that helps.

Olahaha2021 · 16/03/2022 18:44

Thanks everyone. I just don't understand it at all. I know midwife etc can only go on what the gtt results say but it doesn't add up with everything else and I worry about the harm it may cause the baby. Measuring smaller for gest age and fear about post birth sugar levels which will only be tested if you have gest diabetes!!! My results for fasting were 4 and post was 6 apparently. Thank you eveeyone. Some reassuring advice amongst all of that and relieved to hear I'm not actually going insane.

Did you do any significant exercise before/during the OGTT? Ie if you walked to the hospital, and walked around significantly during the OGTT it could distort it.

Olahaha2021 · 16/03/2022 19:05

No excercise but I did drink water following as it was offered and apparently this should not be done...
