Moving to US possibility?

Hi all,

So my dad married my American stepmother before I turned 21. I didn't think of it at the time, but it meant that I was able to move to the US too. I was busy with uni etc. Now I'm 31 and I don't suppose so, but does anybody know if there is a chance it would still be possible? I very much doubt it, but just wondering...

From your post, I think it sounds like your dad and stepmother would need to petition for you for a green card. Does your dad have citizenship now?

MonaLisaUC · 16/03/2022 15:42

OK, Yeah, that sounds like an idea. He's a US citizen now.

There is a process called chain immigration so it is a possibility. You would need to look into eligibility though.

RandomQuest · 16/03/2022 17:31

Yes you can apply. If you’re unmarried you’d go into the highest preference group.

Thank you all. I'm going to look into the websites.

Hello, me again! I've been in touch with the American Embassy in London to find about about jobs. They say they can't answer any questions until I have/(my dad has) submitted my petition. The question is: As my husband is the main breadwinner and he and my children will be coming over with visas (not the green card yet), will I have to work or will he be able to work straight away like usual? (I don't mind working. I work part time, but I am home with the kids the majority of the time until they are a bit older). Does anyone have any information about this before I pay for the petition? Thank you!

the question is, why the hell would you want to?

Exactly! Why would anyone want to move away from bad weather, grumpy people, football and pub culture, and a general dislike of other nations?

There is a lot that is fabulous about the US. The vastness, the variety, the countryside is stunning, the wildlife, amazing food (no its not all fast food) many lovely people and in the OP's case - family.

Mumsnet has a very fixed idea of America - the healthcare, the lack of a social safety net, the homeless, the Bible bashers and Trump supporters - all bad thngs obviously.

But the standard of life in the UK isn't great for a lot of people these days. We have seriously considered it, but couldn't leave our family. I know several people who have made the move and are happy after the initial culture shock.

Thank you SalsaLove and DalarnaHorses. Exactly the reasons stated above. I have also lived in California for a year as part of my University course, so I have good friends there as well as family who I visit every year.

@MonaLisaUC

Do bear in mind that you could be waiting up to 10 years though…..
