Do you think Tesco's value mouthwash (46p) will be an ok product to use?

I'm massively cutting back. Does anyone else use this? Do you think it works as well as pricier stuff? I'm trying to look after my teeth to save on trips to the dentist.

I would use the pricier one half as often.

DramaAlpaca · 15/03/2022 20:20

I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be absolutely fine.

Goawayquickly · 15/03/2022 20:20

I think it comes down to comparing ingredients really. Like generic painkillers are the same as branded.

I use one from Lidl which is about that price too. It's fine

XenoBitch · 15/03/2022 20:21

It is the active ingredients you want to look at. Branded and shop brand often have the same.
I use the Tesco version of Corsodyl. It is half the price.

LittleMsPerfect · 15/03/2022 20:23

@Goawayquickly

Yes I agree check the fluoride content too.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 15/03/2022 20:28

It’s probably exactly the same.

Do you really need mouthwash? When do you use it?

Coffeesnob11 · 15/03/2022 20:33

My dentist yes told me not to use it unless I really really want to freshen my breath between brushing

My dentist told me to use it as well as flossing. It appears to have the same flouride content but the other ingredients are different.

I bought the cheapest one a few weeks back. It is absolutely vile tasting, almost made me throw up. Waste of money for me.

sageandbasil · 15/03/2022 21:16

@Coffeesnob11 is right. Don't use it after brushing but use it in between brushes to freshen up

Brogues · 15/03/2022 22:05

@XenoBitch is it the pro formula one?

That's exactly what my dentist and hygienist said. Flossing is the more important bit, and the Tepe brushes.

When i did use mouthwash I found a lot of them way too strong and almost burny.

caecilius1 · 15/03/2022 22:12

@sageandbasil's dentist is spot on. Very little point in mouthwashes. Good periodontal health is all about the mechanical removal of plaque, ie effective toothbrushing and interdental cleaning.
For caries prevention, no mouthwash has as much fluoride as a fluoride -containing toothpaste.

Yep!

dementedpixie · 15/03/2022 22:27

Don't use it after brushing as you just wash away the fluoride from the toothpaste. Use it in between brushings if you want to use it

ditto. nothing wrong with using basic items. only trade up as it were if the basic one is unsuitable for some reason. try basic first. no need to waste money. i took to swishing with lidl basic more often during pandemic, in the hope it would push back the germs in around mouth. so tend to do it whenever washing hands in bathroom. i find it also helps me to curb mindless nibbling. like to keep the fresh feel in my mouth.
Brogues · 15/03/2022 22:35

Thanks @XenoBitch DH might be getting a ‘substitute’ to try.
