Would you rather pay £20.00 with free shipping or £16.50 and £3.50 shipping for the same item

I would be paying £20 with the free shipping, I begrudge paying for shipping!

I'll have a basket full of things but as soon as I check out and see anything above £2 for shipping I close the tab Blush

You begrudge the cost of packaging and all the transportation cost of the courier service to your door ? How strange.

I know what you mean! I used to be a sucker for anything with free P& P but now I'm better at working out if I'm actually better off paying postage on the same Jen but cheaper IYSWIM every penny counts

beenaroundtheblox · 15/03/2022 16:05

I'm the same. It's absolutely ridiculous and no reason at all why I should get things shipped to me for free but hey ho that's the way I am. So many companies offer free delivery (obviously included in the price somewhere) that I still begrudge that extra few quid. I know I'm unreasonable.

Soubriquet · 15/03/2022 16:05

I would go with what ever was cheapest.

ouch321 · 15/03/2022 16:06

Yeah I hate paying delivery charges because shopping is normally a free activity when carried out in store.

But also the level of dislike goes down the more I spend.

£3 delivery for a £15 top. Angry
£3 delivery for £100 of clothes Smile

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/03/2022 16:07

It annoys me when I see £3.50 shipping on a thin light top on ebay that would cost 80p to post. But I suppose you have to add on materials (20p?), time (no idea).

It just turns a cheap £3 top (perfectly priced for a second hand vest top) into something more expensive than I could buy new from a shop.

greensnail · 15/03/2022 16:08

I'm the same, absolutely hate paying for delivery, but don't think twice about driving somewhere, maybe even paying for parking to get free click and collect. Makes absolutely no sense 🤷‍♀️

Keladrythesaviour · 15/03/2022 16:10

I'd pay higher price and free p&p. Partly because you're more likely to get a full refund if you return. Even when they're supposed to refund p&p I find you have to fight for it! Whereas if it's just £20 (for example) it's usually an easy refund.

FairyCakeWings · 15/03/2022 16:10

£20 with free delivery, obviously.

I didn't think of it that way!

You do understand shipping isn't 'free' right, just because it's not listed separately, it is included in the price?

I sell things to customers both here in the UK and abroad and I list the shipping separately as I can't in all conscience include full shipping costs to Australia and the USA in the product cost. Shipping to Australia costs in the region of £45 -60, would you really prefer I include that in the cost to you, a UK customer, when UK shipping would be about £9-10.

I've even tried listing UK customers as having 'free' shipping, an charging overseas customers the difference between UK shipping and shipping to their location. This did not go down well with my customer base - at all. So shipping is listed separately and everyone thinks that's fair and above board.

Pay the shipping, don't be fooled by the 'Free shipping' lie!

MangoBiscuit · 15/03/2022 16:15

£16.50 and £3.50 delivery.

Because if I want to buy 5 similar products, it's (5 * 16.50) + 3.50 = £82.50 rather than £100.

namechangeanonymous · 15/03/2022 16:17

I do spend an awful lot of time tralling websites to find something cheap to build upto the free postage.

Tippexy · 15/03/2022 16:20

£20 with free shipping then look for a discount code… Wink

WouldIwasShookspeared · 15/03/2022 16:29

I sell online.
I sell much more when I include shipping in my price than when it's a separate charge. I've tried both ways several times and it is consistent.

Depending on how much people are buying they can end up spending more than they would if they paid shipping separately but 🤷‍♀️ people like to think they're getting free shipping.

They're not. They're getting factored-in shipping.

BarbaraofSeville · 15/03/2022 17:35

Aversion to paying for shipping and companies cutting costs to try and make a profit from something necessary that no-one wants to pay for is the reason why we get such shit service from the likes of Yodel and My Hermes.

It costs money to pay people to operate equipment and drive vehicles to move things around. We can't expect things to magically appear at our door for free.

That's a good point!

This is why I specifically look for retailers with free P&p even if the overall cost is more expensive.
Justmuddlingalong · 15/03/2022 17:45

Is there a choice of courier? I would be swayed more by that than the small difference in cost.

Gladioli23 · 15/03/2022 17:51

I agree with the points about shipping costs not being refunded if you need to return.

I also have a particular resentment of paying shipping costs when I can't get the product except via the internet. E.g. sports direct is an unpleasant brand (and unpleasant to shop in) but I do recognise that I could go into their shops and pick up my own items so the shipping charge makes sense. For other online only shops, there is no way to get the goods except by having them delivered - so I much prefer shipping to be included.

mizzo · 15/03/2022 17:54

Free shipping always.
In a similar vein when we were going to soft play I always felt ripped off at the one where it was £4 for children and £1.50 for adults but happily went to the one that was £5.50 for children and free for adults!

This is me! Makes no sense at all!
Blossom64265 · 15/03/2022 17:57

It is easier to compare prices if shipping is included. Hence I prefer included shipping. Otherwise I have to go through the hassle of looking up the shipping cost or adding to my cart to get the total for each shop.

StrongerOrWeaker · 15/03/2022 18:07

I'm the same with vat in America. Just include it in the price!
