Recommendations for kids abroad

Kids are 7 & 9 and have never been on a plane. We have been on holiday to Wales, Scotland and a few places in England. This suits me as I don't like the heat and also as small kids it was more than enough to just have a few days away, and also what we were lucky enough to be able to afford.

We were meant to go away this summer with family for a celebration, this has now been cancelled (nothing was booked), but the kids thought they would be going on a plane.

I am working extra hours to save a bit (and would rather keep saving as things are) however I thought we might go somewhere in October half term, as it might be less hot.

But as pre-kids I preferred a city drinking cocktails in bars break I am clueless where might be good to go?

Just a nice hotel with pool and maybe beach and short haul and cheap would be great Smile any suggestions please of where to look?

Belgium. The beaches great, the trains are reliable and affordable and the people are great

At that age they'd adore the whole cheesy kid's club vibe (and the songs will live with you forever!)

Bright neon lights and entertainment in bars will have their eyes on stalks way past their bedtimes, it's magical.

Throw in a waterpark, boat trips, bit of snorkelling and the memories will last a lifetime.

I'd suggest Spain, we were (still are) fond of the Canary Islands when the kids were small. The only one we didn't rate as highly out of the Big Four was Gran Canaria.

We also fell in love with Marmaris, latterly Icmeler (neighbouring village, a little quieter)

Travelled all over the world a few times a year, and I still think the much maligned 'Brits Abroad' type of resorts really offer it all for young families and are generally well connected transport wise to explore off the beaten track.

I'm excited for you, enjoy!

Spain. Not too long a flight for first time kids.
If you want to ‘ abroad but not abroad’ I’d recommend Jersey. Beautiful beaches, Jersey Zoo ( founded by Gerald Durrell) Great shopping/ bars/hotels.

Wouldn't have thought it would be warm enough for outdoor swimming in Belgium or Spain or Jersey in late October though?

Canaries would probably be the easiest.

October too cold for outdoor swim
Unless heated pool

mylittleyumyum · 15/03/2022 16:16

We swim all year round in the Canaries (sea generally warmer than pools)

We do need a pool to be heated from October to April though.

Too cold anywhere to swim in an outdoor pool, even the heated ones are chilly. Find a hotel with indoor facilities.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the tips and advice. Especially as I wasn't thinking Oct half term is very late Oct.
Much appreciated!

October half term would mean Cyprus or Canary Island and even then we had cool evenings and rainy days thrown in.

You don’t need heat in Summer. How about Italian Lakes?

Belgium and Dutch coast are great, weather should be more stable than England but not guaranteed sun all day. Southern Germany or Austria has lots to do for children.
