Condenser tumble dryer recommendations anyone?

I’m moving to a tiny flat. We aren’t supposed to dry washing on radiators and it’s so small I don’t want an airer with washing around drying for days. I’ve no outside area to hang anything outdoors. So I’m thinking of taking out a kitchen cupboard to make room for a dryer. I need something as cheap as possible but reliable and good if such a thing exists. Any recommendations are appreciated.

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’re looking for tumble dryers, we’ve recently updated our best tumble dryer page with lots of great options rated by Mumsnet users, plus info on condenser dryers. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Indesit, don't normally like the brand but was only one we could find that didn't have a stupid sensor. It's great, the clothes actually come out dry!

Agree with Beko, and the heat pump ones are worth it even if over budget, as they use about half the electricity of a condenser so will pay for itself in savings in around a year or so depending on how much washing you do.

Why wouldn't you want a sensor? The sensor makes it more efficient and doesn't over dry things so it's better on your clothes. You do need to pick a brand that has the same idea of "dry" as you do though or that lets you choose the degree of dryness. I have to use the extra dry button on mine but when I do that they come out perfectly.

It's worth paying for the which results so you can see how different brands did and different models between brands. I'd share what it said but I'm in Germany and they have totally different models, annoyingly.

I have a Hoover condenser dryer. It has the royal warrant so obviously the Queen uses it to dry her robes. It's the second one I've had and is brilliant.

Heat pump here too mines a Sharp as pretty much all of the Ones I wanted were out of stock but I’m very happy with it particularly as when I used it my smart meter stays in the green instead of red!

May I ask a question about heat pump tumble dryers please? I use the residual heat from the condenser tumble dryer to air dry clothes that can't be tumble dried in my utility room. Heat source seem to be more efficient and operate at lower temperatures. Does that mean the room they're in doesn't get as warm? I'm trying to trade off machine efficiency with how I use my 'drying room'.

BertieBotts · 15/03/2022 21:44

That's right. They don't really give off heat in the same way. Essentially you're using the excess heat in much the same way that a heat pump dryer does, so you are probably getting just as much efficiency out of your condenser.

As in, you use the residual heat to dry the clothes. A heat pump dryer directs that residual heat into the drum to help dry the clothes there.

@BertieBotts really appreciate your response. Yes I'm using that residual heat so in my case it's not wasted. But if it was just in a general kitchen area it would be. Thank you!
