Me too! I've recently got my DC reading his books, and they're loving the witches.

ChiselandBits · 12/03/2022 10:08

Absolutely. Gradually getting my kids into it and push all the kids I teach that way too. I have a wall display all about him with quotes etc.

FlippyFloppyFlappy · 12/03/2022 10:10

I've never read one I'm ashamed to say, I always mean to start one.

So do I. I bought The Shepherd's Crown when it was released, but it took me a long time to begin reading it. When I did, it made me cry. Not just the sadness of the book, but the sadness of it all. And it being over.

I want to read them all again, I've read them many times, but I just can't being myself to do it yet. Sad

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 12/03/2022 10:21

I did give The Amazing Maurice and The Wee Free Men to a friends daughter for Xmas though. Hopefully she liked them.

I feel like I want to give other people the joy of reading them for the first time.

40Jem · 12/03/2022 10:22

I've never read any of them . What would you recommend to read first?

hedgehogger1 · 12/03/2022 10:31

I like watch series as a good place to start. I think the first one might be men at arms?

Theluggagerules · 12/03/2022 10:52

The Colour of Magic is the beginning and they just get better and better. I haven't finished his last book as when I do I'll have to accept there won't be any more. Plus it gives me an excuse to reread the others first

Still sad we'll never get another book from him, but he lives on through his amazing characters.

Wailywailywaily · 12/03/2022 10:56

I miss them too. I’ve been trying to get DS into them but he prefers SciFi, the weirdo.

Wailywailywaily · 12/03/2022 10:58

I still spot the TP usernames on MN and smile.

Yes, I was bitterly disappointed that DD wasn't taken with the Tiffany Aching books. I still don't understand why, they should be right up her street - she loves magic and fantasy and strong female heroines!

You don't need to read the whole series in the order in which they were written. They split into several themes and a few standalones so I'd start at the beginning of a theme, read the rest of the books in the theme and then, if you like them, start at the beginning of the series. The most popular themes are the witches, the Watch and Death.

Witches: Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Masquerade and Carpe Jugulum. Equal Rites comes at the beginning of this theme but it's not a great introduction because he hadn't really got into his stride yet.

The Watch: Guards! Guards!, Men at Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, Night Watch, Thud! and Snuff.

Death: Mort, Reaper Man, Soul Music, Hogfather, Thief of Time.

Be aware that the Alzheimer's starts to show before the end of the series. IMO he got a bit clunky with the messages in the last books and The Shepherd's Crown is best left unread so you never finish all his books.

GNU pTerry.

@ThatLibraryMiss beat me to it. What she said.

Tomeeornottomee · 12/03/2022 11:29

I read Shepherds Crown once and once only. All the others I’ve read multiple times. Love the Witches and Watch, but DEATH always will be my favourite character. I Miss the joy of getting my newest Pratchett, arranging it so the house will be, if not empty, at least quiet. Arming myself with a days worth of snacks and heading up to my room to read it in one go.
GNU STP. Mind how you go

Oncemoreuntothebreachagain · 12/03/2022 11:35

The highlight of my teaching year has been that I have 3 children reading STP books!
GNU Wonderful Terry Pratchett

My heart belongs Sam Vimes - though it's a close call between him and Granny Weatherwax.

AlviarinAesSedai · 12/03/2022 12:01

I still have physically read his last book. 😢. But I bought the audiobook, and had a good sob.
