I hate wet rooms!

We are on a weekend break at an air B and B. It's very pretty, very modern but urgh I missed the bit in the description about the wet room. Now everyone is taking turns trying to do morning smelly poos and have showers in one giant cubicle. The toilet is wet, the floor is wet, there's long hair everywhere even after the DDs have squeegeed the floor. It's all just gross.

Whose idea was that?!? Yes let's just remove the screen and let them hose down the whole room!

And to top it all of youngest DS did a poo that clung, the only time I've been grateful for a toilet brush, and the top fell off into the toilet.

Bleurgh.

I agree with you completely. They're a terrible idea.

I’m with you! We bought a house last year with a downstairs wet room. Something I never wanted but having a loo and sink downstairs is handy. I took the shower out as soon as we moved in and it was leaking. The previous owner had 7 dogs and used the room to wash them which made sense I suppose but it’s not for me. Too much water going everywhere as you say.

spacehardware · 12/03/2022 08:53

Agreed - they remind me of the loos at public swimming baths where the seats are always wet

Yuk yuk yuk

If the room isn't big enough to accommodate a proper shower cubicle, don't bother. If it is, put one in!

Peachy7 · 12/03/2022 08:53

Clearly you've all been lucky enough to have never needed one! Think of all the disabled people that couldn't shower if there wasn't one. It's a necessity for some, just because it's a slight inconvenience to you!

Exactly this!

Yes that's exactly what they remind me of!

Just because we would not choose to have a wet room in our homes doesn't mean we want to inconvenience disabled people 🙄 at the auto offence taking

I also hate roll top baths generally, and particularly free standing in hotel bedrooms. Is it supposed to be sexy or something?

I take your point but this one isn't in any way accessible for people with disabilities and it clearly wasn't designed with that it mind.

I’m disabled, cannot access a shower cubicle or bath, hence my need for a wet room.

VladsPants · 12/03/2022 09:01

They turn my stomach for some reason. Nowhere to put a towel that doesn’t end up damp, can’t take clean clothes or even underwear in for the same reason.

Obviously if it’s there for people with disabilities that’s a different and essential scenario.

NiLunNiLautre · 12/03/2022 09:01

Have also suffered these in holiday cottages... wet socks, wet toilet seat... hate them!

lapasion · 12/03/2022 09:02

The big spacious ones are nice, although admittedly they’d be a pain in the arse to clean if it was your own home. The small ones are awful though. It reminds me of when I went on a sleeper train and the bathroom was just a toilet with a shower head over the top.

That really is my pet hate. A beautiful bedroom in a hotel with a bloody bath ploned in the corner of it. How is that meant to be sexy?

As a person with mobility issues they're a necessary evil; I'm not keen on them myself.

Main problem is that most of the time the space isn't big enough - when it is they can be great.

furballfun · 12/03/2022 09:24

I've seen them done well - one place I stayed had an enormous disabled wet room, and there was a very slight ramp into the shower area meaning that water stayed in it. However the size of the room meant the loo was a good distance away - I've seen others where it was almost impossible to avoid spraying the whole room, and they aren't great.

Yes same. We stayed in a place where the room was very large and clearly well designed for people with mobility issues. It all worked really well. Most aren't and don't. This one included. Bleurgh.

When we first arrived in London we rented a flat that had a wet room. For 10 months of the year it was too cold for the bloody room to dry out so you had to wear slippers with proper soles.

Just before we left the floor started to bounce and when dh went downstairs to see if it was leaking...it was very much so, but the Aussie backpackers wouldn't tell our landlord as there was too many of them living there. Mould everywhere 🤢

RandomMess · 12/03/2022 09:39

We have a "shower room"'wet room floor but there is a single screen between the loo/sink and the shower.

Most "inadequate" wet rooms would be transformed by doing the same thing and if they are too small to do that then they are too small full stop!!

A disabled access wet room is an entirely different kettle of fish and should be large enough to not need a screen and everywhere stay dry.

You can still put a door on a shower with disabled access though.

Bunnycat101 · 12/03/2022 12:12

I had one when I was a student that was rubbish and tiny so you had to put the loo roll in the bedroom. The good ones I’ve seen have been quite big.

Dancingsmile · 12/03/2022 12:18

A wet room needs to be cleverly designed to work. My parents have one; their bathroom isn't large, but it was planned by someone who knew what they were doing.
It does have a shower screen that is small to give a wide entrance but enough protection so the water doesn't go everywhere.

Peachy7 · 12/03/2022 16:24

Not if you need to use a shower chair, or have a carer in with you you can't

We once had a flat in Stockholm for a month with a lovely large wet room. Beautifully tiled. Shower/sink/loo well spaced along one wall and a wall of cabinets opposite. The sink, loo, brush and bin were wall mounted so it was a doddle to clean.Loads of towel racks away from the shower.

I am sure it was fully accessible but also delightful for all.

I have never seen another wet room I liked.
