Why do some women get 'morning' sickness whilst others don't?

I am 8 weeks pregnant with DC3. I've just dropped DC2 off at nursery and just about made it home, gagging, retching, hiding behind a postbox and other things to conceal my face on the walk back home.

I have a few friends who seem to sail through there pregnancies, maybe a little nausea but nothing they find debilitating... is 'morning' sickness a genetic thing? My mum was very sick with me and my sister.

I've tried medications, ginger , those wrist band things, I've tried eating as soon as I wake up. I really hate the first trimester and I'm finding it so unfair that I have to be sick!

*sorry for all those typos

I didn’t have any morning sickness at all with my first (ds) but suffered horribly with it with my dd.

Interesting area for some more research. It would help women massively if there was some genetic link and you could identify potential HG cases before they get serious.

My mum felt sick with my brother, but wasn't sick. She was very sick with me.

I felt sick with my son but wasn't sick. I was sick a few times with DD ...

Thanks for the comments everyone, it's interesting to read about other women's experiences with this.

I also wish there was more research being done into it. Maybe one day...

I've just been sick again 😩 the kids are watching tv and I feel so crap.
Any tips for keeping them occupied? 3 & 4 (pretty much)

It doesn't help that it's raining out. I'm just glad that they won't remember this!

CBeebies! Always CBeebies.

If it helps, my brother saw my mum being sick once with me. Apparently he asked her why she was putting the baby down the toilet! He'd have been 3!

Have 5 DC and also had 3 MC so 8 pregnancies. Sick as a dog during 3 of them but barely anything at all during the other 5, not sure why at all. At first I thought it was male pregnancies because DC1 and 4 are boys but DC5 is also a boy and I had no nausea at all. My Mum didn’t have it with me but did with my younger brother.

I don't know. Just luck I suppose. I didn't have a day of sickness in either pregnancy. Had literally one or two of days in the early weeks both times where I felt like what I can describe as very mildly hungover but that was it.

My pregnancies were easy. However I had a really really horrendous time giving birth (first time, second was ELCS because of the first one m) and breastfeeding (both times). I always say I'm good at getting and being pregnant, I'm utterly rubbish at getting them out and feeding them!

All luck of the draw though. Nothing you do or don't do makes a difference I don't think.

Hope you feel better soon OP.

Oh, and mine are both girls. So the 'girls make you sicker' thing wasn't true for me.

WellNotReally · 11/03/2022 14:15

I vomited from 5 weeks pregnant until 2 hours after my DC was born. Often 7 or 8 times a day. I was told it was more common in twin pregnancies, and that women who have HG have a lower rate of miscarriage. This was 20+ years ago though so I've no idea if those theories have long since been disproven.

I suffer with severe travel sickness and migraines and have often wondered if there's a link with either of those.

Oh and labour was horrendous and ended up with ventouse, so I'm not going with that old wives tale Grin

AHungryCaterpillar · 11/03/2022 14:18

I never had any morning sickness and had 4 pregnancies. I’m not sure why but nope nothing at all.

bookish83 · 11/03/2022 14:19

@LaraDeSalle

I had awful morning sickness with mine but very easy labours.

An old Irish midwife told me that if you have bad morning sickness at the beginning you will have an easy labour.

I took this as being an old wives tale but anyone I’ve ever told this has agreed that if they had morning sickness their labours were easy and vice versa, if they didn’t suffer sickness at the beginning their labours requires intervention etc.

I expect lots on here will say differently!

I wish! Had the worst of both labour and morning sickness!
