Ingrown hair scars

I’m looking for some advice please šŸ™ I have a lot of marks/scars from ingrown hairs on my left leg (photo is of worst part of my leg), which have mainly come about over the last year or 2, although I have not had any big new ones for months. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to fade these please? I have been using Palmer’s skin therapy oil daily, which says it helps reduce the appearance of scars but doesn’t seem to have done so, although it seems to be moisturising enough that I don’t get as many now. I’m dreading going on holiday in June as I don’t want my legs out looking like this 😩

Hi! I have the same problem. Did you find anything that helped?

FuppinNora · 05/02/2023 11:02

Interested also!

Silicone gel is good for scars

Silicone scar sheets - you can buy on Amazon.

I've heard positive things about Bio Oil for reducing scars. You might have more luck with this on the Style and Beauty board.

The plastic surgeon who removed a skin lesion from my shoulder told me to not to bother spending money on Bio Oil, but to massage the scar with Nivea, i.e. something cheap. It's the massaging action that helps lessen the scarring. But, that was a much bigger scar. I'd try the silicone things if I were the OP.

I think you need prevention as well as cure with this. What do you do for hair removal? I ask as waxing and epilating can give awful ingrowing hairs.
You would benefit from gentle exfoliation too, you need to remove the dead skin cells and soften the skin so that the hair can come through rather than grow inwards. This will also help with the appearance of the scarring.

That's a lot of ingrown hairs. Are you using an epilator? I went back to shaving because I got a lot of ingrown hairs from using an epilator. Not had one since.

I've tried everything. I suffered horribly as I'm a picker as well. I removed the issue at source and got laser. 4 years down the line the scars have faded and no new ones.

I used to use the nip fab extreme pads on my legs. I think it helped a bit. A bit of fake tans helps with most things too.

I would also recommend laser, I had bumps that wouldn’t shift and a used a combination of things. It’s been a journey and my legs have been an issue for bumps for years and years. I finally have found something that works but laser is the biggest game changer. I go to a local clinic which is part of SKN clinics, they always have deals on if you ask. I think I paid just under Ā£800 for 8 sessions for full leg and bikini. I’ve only had 3 on my legs but see photo below. The first is from the summer time, I did have a course of antibiotics which helped a little but I’d say the products helped but laser was the best thing I’ve ever done. It doesn’t work for everyone but you should be able to get a free consultation. I am fair with brown hair and it works very well on me. I had other areas lasered before but this is only 3 out of 8 sessions. I did shave my legs a few days back but let me tell you, before laser if I shaved in the morning, by the afternoon I had stuble!

  • Nip and Fab pads, I would wipe over my legs before going to bed
  • I was using Hibiscrub, putting it on my skin for 15 mins and then showering, I found this really harsh on my skin but it works for others
  • I then switched to bizarrely an anti dandruff shampoo as a body wash. If you Google folliculitis / yeast folliculitis, there is an ingredient that helps which is found in this shampoo in boots called Nizerol.
  • Ive also been using Saylic Acid, the Me+ one in a brown bottle from Superdrug. That really has helped with clearing out the blocked pores
  • Lastly I’ve been using CeraVe smoothing cream and that’s made my legs so moisturised and clearing them up.

Hope that helps x

I would also recommend some kind of exfoliating acid such as salicylic or glycolic. I did this on my chin after a bout of awful spots and it really helped - I think I used some Clearasil 5 in 1 pads.
