Have I been committing a social faux pas with my use of the thumbs up emoji?

On a few threads recently I've seen people suggest using the thumbs up emoji to be dismissive, mocking or to end an unwelcome exchange.

I use it a lot, meaning it in a friendly and positive way where I want to agree with something or wish someone luck.

Should I stop? Is this like David Cameron thinking LOL meant lots of love and sending it when someone's parent had died?

It’s normal in a text conversation (eg when making plans), dismissive on MN because OPs usually want a discussion. It’s just about context IMO.

I've had the same thought OP and now I second-guess myself whenever I go to use it.

Reminds me of when I read a long thread on here in which many MNers were adamant that "You look well" is bitchy code for "You look fat". It never was when I said it, but that got me wondering if people thought I was being a cow 😬

I find it quite rude

Like the person just cba to talk to me anymore so the thumbs up ends the conversation

You look well

Yes! I say this when someone looks well! It doesn't mean I think they're fat at all!

I used it as ‘ok’ or ‘agreed’ or ‘thanks’ and I usually receive them in the same context.
I’m glad that I never use ‘you look well’, life is so complicated nowadays.

Unfortunately I'm another one who really dislikes the thumbs up emoji.

To me, it comes across as superior, dismissive and lazy. It's been a huge pet hate of mine for ages. Well, that and the word "chillax".

I'm sure lots of people use the thumbs up with the best of intentions, but it's guaranteed to make me instantly feel a bit stabby. I completely accept that may be irrational.
