Imaginary Lottery Win

What would be a ‘nice’ amount for you to win? Maybe not enough to retire on or buy a 27 bedroom house, but just to set you up nicely. I could go for about £250k. Pay off the mortgage, do some work to the house, change my car, possibly drop a day in work.

500k could do it for me, just need enough to build my future proof homestead.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/03/2022 07:08

A million would be nice. It would pay off my mortgage easily, set me up for retirement and have money to leave to DS towards a house. I would still have to work, but I wouldn't have to worry about my pension and I could enjoy spending my wages on luxuries.

OhThatChicken · 11/03/2022 07:12

Two million for me. Pay off the house, replace pension contributions I couldn't afford in the post kids years. Help my parents and in-laws. Have enough money to help the kids through uni if they want to go and a deposit each for a house. A nice holiday or two and no more worrying what if they boiler goes or the car needs replacing or whatnot.

itsnotdeep · 11/03/2022 07:17

I'd need £3m to buy a nice house where I live. Plus another couple to buy a second house by the sea.

I'd be happy with that probably, but if I wanted enough to live off the interest and stop work then £100m seems a reasonable amount.

Morechocmorechoc · 11/03/2022 07:21

I think the more you have the more you need! I think to set everyone up you need to be able to give a million to each younger generation (30s down) family member. Then the dream home with a moat I found was 6.5m, that needs land keepers and house keepers. The types of holidays you take would escalate. Schooling, cars, kids houses, kids cars etc.....grand kids. I mean we are already at 30m and that's without then allowing for not working and therefore just spending and helping out friends. So realistically probably 50m woukd just about do it Grin

Morechocmorechoc · 11/03/2022 07:22

I'd settle for a million though to wipe out the mortgage, get a nice car and pay schooling!

I wouldn't buy a house with a moat if I was the richest person in the world. I HATE big houses and always have. I just don't need space like that. I also can't drive so wouldn't be buying cars.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 11/03/2022 07:31

Not bothered about private school for DS either, it wouldn't be on my priority list.

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 11/03/2022 07:33

I spent fear too much time day dreaming about this!

300k would pay of mortgage and top up retirement pot to allow manageable pension income and possibly early retirement if I downsized house/ moved area.

500k would do above, plus 200k towards first homes for all 3 kids.

£1m would do above in luxury! Plus allow something to go to wider family.

Anything more I'd set up larger trusts for kids ( bulk of which wouldn't come until they were mid twenties at least), more to wider family and friends, and lots to charity...

I'm lucky that I like my house and whilst I might modernise a bit and add an extension I wouldn't necessarily move.

Oh, and I'd have (even) more cats!

Igmum · 11/03/2022 07:34

I love this game! I like the £250k amount- for me it would sort most of the mortgage and make the rest realistic for me to repay, which would make such a difference. A couple of million and I'd go for a different house, lovely and large and turn the heating on! Many millions would change a fair few things I think. Any is welcome (looking at you Premium Bonds Grin)

ItsAlwaysThere · 11/03/2022 07:35

I would like one million.

I would love to pay the mortgage off, do the work on the house and have an abroad family holiday. Also I would like to have a bit of a buffer in the bank in savings.

Too much money scares me! I don't take change well and like our life, we could just be more comfortable.

Hollyhead · 11/03/2022 07:36

500k would be perfect, it would enable a house move and upgrading the eco friendliness of the new house to a good standard. I’d still work but it would allow for an earlier retirement - probably 60 rather than 75!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/03/2022 07:37

No idea but I send myself off to sleep planning my Lottery Winner Kitchem ( pantry , utility with 2 WM 2 TD Drying Cupboard and every piece of kit in John Lewis ) Orangery attached and a huge kitchen table

Or the surgery I'll have from the head down ......

No House Bunnies , I'd have a Guinea-Pig Room
So £100 million should do it

Alsonification · 11/03/2022 07:47

My dream would be to pay off my mortgage (around €80k) but I don’t need to move cos I love my house. Then I’d also like to have a few quid for my parents, brothers & friends and some for a charity. Then my added extra would be enough to buy a 3 bed apartment in the old arsenal Highbury stadium & season tickets to the emirates. Then I could fly over for every game, stay in my lovely apartment & stroll round the corner home after the match.

I think five million - I could pay myself a salary double what I earn right now, so a lovely upgrade in lifestyle - buy a larger house and help my kids on the property ladder and still have plenty left to live out my days.

Anything more is a bonus!

gingerhills · 11/03/2022 07:52

A million would mean we could stay in our house which I love, and update it, instead of having to downsize now DC are adults.

About 4 million would mean being able to help DC buy homes in London and help out other family members.

10 mill would help set up a venture I'd love to run but is way too risky financially so it would be a sort of vanity project but a really fun one that would help lots of people I know.

MrsMigginsCat · 11/03/2022 07:59

3 million would see us right. A million for each DC to buy a property and have some savings. Leaves a million for us to finally be able to buy a house - we're early-mid fifties - round here that could be done for 500k and we would only need 3 maybe 4 bedrooms.

Then 500k in savings/some for nice holidays in years to come. I'd still work, but maybe only part time. DH has a physical job so he could probably stop of find something part time that requires less from him physically.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 11/03/2022 08:00

I’d be happy with £100k as it would pay off my mortgage some home improvements and have a bit of a nest egg .
£1 million Id upgrade the house nothing amazing and I’d probably carry on working but be able to retire early . Buy my dd a flat /small house , Hire a cleaner , have a few amazing holidays and just plan a Lovely comfortable life without the financial worry of the future .

flashpaper · 11/03/2022 08:38

I'd say £3m would allow us to live a good life where we wouldn't need to work. It means we would have £50k per year (which is our combined salary now) for the next 40 years, plus £1m to allow us to pay off the mortgage and travel like we want to (with loads left over). I know with inflation that £50k might not do us in 40 years time but if we paid off the mortgage, car, credit cards etc and only had basic bills then it should do us.

Realistically, £120k would do me, so I could pay off my mortgage and drop a day at work. This is my absolute dream, I'd love to be mortgage free.

pitterpatterrain · 11/03/2022 08:42

In my daydreams I go for £40 million Grin a nice round £10 million for DH, me and the DC

Of course, anything would be helpful but that is where my daydreams start to get way more interesting …

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/03/2022 09:05

So £100 million should do it

Shock that should be £10 million, I don't need that much cosmetic surgery !

Woolandwonder · 11/03/2022 09:10

250k would be fine for me. Allow me to buy a house which would be totally life changing. Anything else would be a bonus.

I'd be happy with £50 on a scratch card atm!! 😆

DisforDarkChocolate · 11/03/2022 10:18

Probably about £750K. I'd have a reasonable house, enough to give the children a really good house deposit and my husband could go part-time. I'm already part-time. We'd get a very nice day van and see lots more of our grandchildren.
