Zika and TTC - what would you do?

We are getting married mid summer (just two of us, want to spend money on honeymoon and house improvements instead) and also TTC for 2 years now (sadly one mc).

We would like to go to Peru for honeymoon. However, Peru is at risk of Zika virus (no current outbreak). What would you do?

I think I should chose a safer option instead. However, at the same time don't want to put my life on hold too much given it's been 2 without luck.

PS. Getting blood tests done on NHS so, depending on the results, might start IVF this summer

Not TTC before or while you're there? I assume you're only going for a few weeks?

Can you get an insurance policy that covers you to cancel if you do fall pregnant?

Peru is bloody amazing and it's not the sort of place you can go with kids very easily!

@Clymene thanks for advice. I like the idea of getting insurance in case need to be cancelled!

However, NHS website advice is not to ttc for 3 months after coming back from the country. It's a long time given I've been waiting for 2 years already.

We purposely moved our honeymoon for this reason. We had been planning to go Sri Lanka + the Maldives but i just didn't want to risk it, so we switched to Mauritius, which is zika free. In the end, it wouldn't have mattered as it took another year + fertility treatments to conceive. But i had a very anxious pregnancy as it was, and I'm glad that it wasn't another thing to worry about.

If you've already had one MC and considering IVF then I wouldn't risk it sorry - I don't think I could deal with the added stress of worrying that the baby might have been put at risk no matter how small the odds. I did a lot of IVF treatment and there was a poster in all the treatment rooms listing Zika countries and the recommendation to wait 3 months in return

Oh, sorry I didn't realise. In that case, I'm sorry, I would probably go somewhere else for your honeymoon.

Peru is fab but it's not going anywhere.

@AnotherNC22 - good point on Mauritius. Not where I would ideally like my honeymoon but at least it's safe. How was it? Did you like it?

I would love to go to S Korea and Japan but that's not an option due to Covid. So will have to wait on those.

@twinsetandpearl - I agree with you. I'm already stressed about the fact I'm not getting pregnant for s long. Wouldn't like to add another thing to stress about on top of everything else.

@Clymene - seems Peru will have to wait for now. But on the list for the future travels Grin

@LoveGherkins We had a lovely time in Mauritius. Obviously it isn't an "adventure" destination in the same way as Peru, but that wasn't what we were looking for in our honeymoon. We stayed in the south west - can DM you the hotel if interested. We went for 10days and did 4 or 5 excursions, with the rest of the time spent lounging around the beach / pool. The excursions including diving, visits to rum distilleries, national parks, a couple of museums into the history of the island, a visit to the capital & old town, plus a couple of boating trips to go whale watching. It's easy to hire a car, but we just used drivers so we could have a drink. All very relaxing!

@AnotherNC22 - thanks very much for the feedback! its sounds like you had a lovely time Star Star

If you could let me know the hotel that would be great! We're still looking into Chile (Zika free!) but I'm very keen on Mauritius.

Hello! I hope you won't mind me jumping on this thread.

I just booked a TTC holiday to Sri Lanka because I thought it was Zika free - is this not the case?! I can only get time off in April and am craving winter sun so that's why we're going outside of Europe. Plus I've always wanted to go to Sri Lanka...

I'm aware of the dengue fever out there, so am interested to know thoughts on using Deet/mozzie sprays when TTC. I've not read that they impact fertility or cause birth defects, but I usually try to be as 'natural' while TTC and would normally avoid chemicals etc. Am I over thinking it?!

Hi! I've just found myself in a similar-ish position. We have our honeymoon booked for November, it was supposed to be now but our flights got changed due to COVID. So now we are going to Bali in Nov, starting TTC in Oct. Just googled Zika and Indonesia is down as a risk which puts me in a bit of a conundrum! I'm desperate to start TTC, only leaving it til Oct because the mat leave policy at my new job or would already be TTC. I've read that deet is safe when TTC and pregnant, I have a feeling I'm just going to end up taking the risk!
