Darling/Babe/Hun - Genuinely interested

SchoolRunsAreNotFun · 10/03/2022 15:12

Genuinely interested to get other MN’s opinions on being called the words ‘darling’ or ‘babe’ etc...

I have to admit I’m definitely one to call people ‘lovely’ and my close friends ‘babe’ eg. ‘hi babe just checking in to see how you are...’
I think this stems from my mum and family. My mum will call absolutely anybody ‘darling’ including people her age/older than her.

Interestingly we’ve never been a ‘hun’ or ‘honey’ type of family. Really not sure why.

What about everyone else?

My husband and I say darling or sweetheart to each other or the dc. Sometimes babes in a joking way.

Jonjim · 10/03/2022 15:58

Ex girl friend from Whitley Bay used to call everyone Pet just like Vera.

Mol1628 · 10/03/2022 16:01

I have a friend who always calls me hun. I can’t stand it and I don’t know why.

FirmButFairMum · 10/03/2022 16:06

I hate hun with a passion, my ex boss used to say it all the time Angry

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 10/03/2022 16:10

I don't like any of them, but they're all better than the DH/DC/DP nonsense on here.

rainbowandglitter · 10/03/2022 16:16

I don't like any of them and luckily none of my friends or family use them (well not that I've heard anyway) 😁

GeorgiaGirl52 · 10/03/2022 16:17

Sweetie - for young children like "Do you want a cookie, Sweetie?"
Pumpkin - for babies "Look at that little Pumpkin! She's sweet enough to eat!"

Clarice99 · 10/03/2022 16:18
@Clarice99 out of interest why do you hate them all?
They sound fake/forced.

Using someone's name is far more natural and personal to them/me.

SnotMikeUpPuffedHe · 10/03/2022 16:18

Not a fan. As a family we have all manner of odd names for each other (leading to the memorable occasion when DH called me 'bucket' in front of his parents and we had to style it out). But no huns or babes or any of that unless we're being sarcastic.

My mum used to call me darling and that was okay but it was definitely a 'big family, which child is this?' scenario.

I was at BIL and SIL's house once, not long after they married, and heard him call her 'baby'. I'd never heard anyone outside a pop song actually do that before and I had to run away and cringe.

HangingOver · 10/03/2022 16:19

Friends are "my love" or "love"
Me and DP are darling or poppet (but only when we're alone Blush

Mamamamasaurus · 10/03/2022 16:20

Cock. That's my local equivalent. Fucking love it too.

ParkheadParadise · 10/03/2022 16:22

Definitely not a hun

All of my siblings refer to me as The wean 😂😂

AuntieMarys · 10/03/2022 16:23

I too hate them all. I imagine people who use them to use the word "gawjus".

user1471538283 · 10/03/2022 16:24

I use darling alot and babe, my DF always said love, my bf uses babe or gorgeous. I think that they are all lovely.

SchoolRunsAreNotFun · 10/03/2022 16:38

Had to laugh! Just went through McDonald’s drive through (no judgment please 😂) and the lady handed over my order and said ‘have a nice day my love’ - I liked it, made me feel good.

@Kanaloa yes agreed, definitely in context, you can always tell when someone’s being a sarcy arse.

Wow how patronising - what a dick!

OP posts:
SchoolRunsAreNotFun · 10/03/2022 16:41

It really doesn’t bother me, for some reason I find it more uncomfortable when people use my name instead…I know that’s weird!

agreed @OhMygodddd

@Ilovethecinema 😂 oh no no

I have to admit that I go a bit knee trembly at 'babe' 😊

Don't like 'hun' very much.

MindTheGapMoveAlong · 10/03/2022 16:45

This week I got my first ever ‘Thanks, hun’ from someone. I am depressed that I’ve been hun-friended tbh Grin It’s a tribe I never aspired to belong to.

Hate them all from strangers. Call my kids all kinds of endearments- that's fine. From people I know well I don't mind something like "lovely" or even "beaut" but still hate "hun" and "darl"

DeadButDelicious · 10/03/2022 16:48

Darling is a universal term of endearment in our house. Everyone is darling Grin

My mum and dad call us Love or bud.

Phormiumjester · 10/03/2022 16:50

Don't do babe or hun except to DH but I am guilty of peppering around the darlings, lovelies and beautifuls. Occasional doll too although I revolt myself a bit with that one!

It's not meant in any patronising way. Nor to replace your name.

Jem57 · 10/03/2022 16:55

I alway say my love or lovely.I was a Store Manager for 32 years and sometimes it brightened somebody’s day.
