Hi lovely people! I'm
Hoping to paint my living room this shade but I would like opinions.... I'm hoping it to be a whitey grey colour is this gonna deliver? If not can you recommend anything else. As I say I'm basically wanting a white with a hint of grey
Thanks 😊

I have this in my kitchen but honestly it just looks white not really noticeably grey at all so depends what you’re after but if you’re wanting an actual grey I’d choose something else

paintprobs · 10/03/2022 11:16

Thanks so much for replying I really appreciate it. Is there literally no grey in it at all?

Dulux Porcelain Doll is a very light grey, that looks white in some lights. We have it in our hallway and it's a lovely colour.

I have this on 3 bedroom walls, the 4th wall is navy. The room is really sunny and you can definitely see the hint of grey in it!

Thanks all so much you're a great help!! I've googled porcelain doll and I'll go now and get a sample. It's so hard to get right.

Our living room is really bright with a massive window so I worry that anything too grey will look different with so much natural light x

I’ve just had my hallway decorated in rock salt. It is very light but does have a hint of grey when you look at it in contrast to the white ceiling. If you are looking for something a bit more grey we have polished pebble in the living room (photo with chimney breast)

i have this literally all over my house, its a VERY slightly tinged grey toned white. You only notice it isnt white when you see a blot on a pure white ceiling due to my bad cutting in skills.

We used it to brighten up originally dark rooms - all very light now. Be sure to get the tough version (in the orange tin) as its then scrubbable too!

I have rock salt and it look white, but not bright white and looks a nice muted shade in the shadows/evening. I’m really happy with it.

paintprobs · 10/03/2022 12:23

@MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat can I ask how many coats you used on hall way

OP posts:
MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 10/03/2022 13:00

@paintprobs that is currently one coat but we are having another one done after some more work being done in the house.

So I think I have decided on rock salt. It's to match this paper that I'll have on feature wall. I can't thank you all enough for all your help xxx

Please keep in mind that a paint shade that looks great on someone else’s wall most likely won’t look the same in your house. It’s all due to the Amount of natural light and
Is that natural light coming from a north or south facing window.

A grey wall in a north facing room can take on hints of lilac (even some neutrals do this) whereas in a south facing room it’ll be more like the paint swatch. In my old house I painted my hallway in Dulux Nutmeg White. Loads of windows so nice and bright - it looked a gorgeous soft buff neutral. Tried the same colour in the lounge of my new house which has much smaller windows and it looks a putty grey but on the landing it looks pink. Gah.

Buy tester pots and a roll of lining paper (Poundland). Paint as much of that tester pot on big lengths of lining paper and tack that on the wall. It can then easily be moved about to different walls /rooms.

@Woobeedoo thanks so much for this. I've since been home and tried the testers on my walls and I can see purple in them both. We have a north facing home with massive windows so lots of natural light which is great but I'm finding it so hard to get what I want 🙈

I think goosedown is pretty and quite obviously grey not lilac, but I’ve only had it in south facing rooms.

ramonaquimby · 10/03/2022 16:38

We’ve got rocksalt in a north facing hallway and living room. It’s just a lovely pale white- small hints of grey but only if you’re looking for it, ie look up and see contrast with the white ceilings!

LER83 · 10/03/2022 16:57

I've got porcelain doll in my North facing bedroom and I sometimes think it looks blue! Its a lovely colour though. I'm pretty sure I have white mist in my upstairs hallway and that always looks like a lovely pale shade of grey. I've got engraved locket in my living room and thats a lot darker, and sometimes looks purple! Grey is really hard to get right!

Woobeedoo · 10/03/2022 16:58

@paintprobs

You might want to give Farrow & Ball Cornforth White a shot. Tester pots are a shocking £5 (!) but you might have better luck - in south facing it’s a soft off-white, north facing a soft warm grey (with no lilac undertones). You can always get independent paint shops to mix up F&B in Johnstones for a fraction of the cost - just make sure they paint a sample on some paper once it’s mixed so you can compare and make sure it’s a match as sometimes it can be slightly out and need a small adjustment.
