How annoying is the Ford EcoSport Boot Door in reality

twinsetandpearl · 10/03/2022 08:41

Just that really - desperately need a second car. I hate car shopping. Previously had BMWs but having twins meant no more fancy sports cars plus the service and repairs costs were eye watering. I have a Ford at the moment - cheap to run - and looking at the EcoSport just to give us a bit more space.....but the boot door is hinged to open out rather than up. How annoying is that really in practice?

I do tend to reverse park into spaces as always have parking sensors and wouldn't be confidant driving in to a parking space anymore not with that size of car?

It can be a major pain as you do need to allow space at the back in a different way. I decided against this after test driving extensively for this reason.

FrancesFlute · 10/03/2022 08:48

My friend just got one of these. She really likes the door opening out as she has a job which means she carries a lot of equipment in and out every day. Have you test driven one? I thought the car and boot itself looked relatively
small and I'm just thinking of you have twins if it'll be enough room for double buggy etc.? She loves it (no kids though!)

twinsetandpearl · 10/03/2022 08:49

@soupey1

Thanks for your reply

I think that's what I'm concerned about really - especially as twins will have a double pushchair To get in and out but then I suppose we could just take our other car for family trips

It's annoying as I really like the look of them (and I see loads driving around) plus they aren't that expensive on the second hand market at the moment which is obviously gone a bit crazy

@FrancesFlute

I hate test driving 😂 I drive a lot for work - regularly up to 6 hours a day and would say I'm a confidant driver....in my own car. I seem to revert to the learner driver me of 20 years ago when faced with a car which isn't mine 😂

Our twin pram is a beast - it's a double decker one and just about fits in our current c max boot but I'm hoping come summer time to just get a lightweight folding pushchair which will be much smaller and lighter

I'll try and pluck up the courage to test drive one

The door is about the only thing in the eco sport that doesn’t bother me. Other than that I hate everything about it!

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 10/03/2022 08:55

The boot isn’t that big either with twins you might struggle for space

Orangesox · 10/03/2022 08:58

Honestly, there’s about the same amount of room in them as a fiesta! The boot isn’t too annoying (my dad has one, I regularly drive it) but it can be a bit of a pain sometimes if you’ve parked well, and then some jackass reverses right up to the back of you. I imagine that would be a bit of a disaster if you had little ones with you.

With small kids and a budget I’d strongly advise you to look at the B-Max or Grand C-Max with the rear sliding doors - they are hands down one of the greatest things ever when it comes to getting little ones in and out of cars in tight parking spaces. Good boot size, decent raised driving position without being super high, and much cheaper running costs in account of being regular width tyres rather than the XL width required for most 4x4’s. I loved my B-Max and was gutted when I had to trade it in because my disability meant I struggled with the manual handbrake.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 10/03/2022 08:59

It's a dreadful car and a rare own goal for Ford. I'm amazed they still sell them.

It's also tiny inside, boot and passenger space, so unless your current car is a Ka you won't find an EcoSport a trade-up. You'd quite honestly be better off in a Fiesta.

I'd be looking at another brand -- something square and upright, perhaps a Suzuki Vitara, Kia Niro or Kia Soul (the new ones are electric only but the older ones are petrol, and quite funky in their own way). Or, depending on how old a car you're wanting to look at, a Ford B-Max or C-Max.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 10/03/2022 09:02

Just seen your other post -- if your current car is a C-Max, you'll find the EcoSport way smaller. To get more room than a C-Max you need either a Grand C-Max, an S-Max or a Tourneo.

twinsetandpearl · 10/03/2022 09:12

@NightmareSlashDelightful

Thanks! S max are rare at the moment - I read second hand 7 seaters are in huge demand at the moment and some of the prices are crazy

I'll have a look at the B max and the fiesta

It's honestly just a cheap run around we need and importantly economical on petrol but that can also fit 3 kids (have a 5 year old too!)

I looked at hybrids but second hand there isn't many and also out of price range - I don't really want to spend more than about £12k if I can help it as it will literally only be doing about 10 miles a day running kids to childcare and school whilst I'm at work (DH also works but local but we can't walk to the twins childcare and my work is busy again so I could be needed anywhere in country so have to take the main car)

I believe that the EcoSport is under powered, although I have no experience, other than looking at the figures.

If you want big boot space, have you thought about a Skoda Karoq? The boot is massive. I don’t know what prices they’re fetching though.

twinsetandpearl · 10/03/2022 09:31

@Foxyloxy1plus1

I'll have a look but I don't want a "massive" car which I know is silly when I've got 3 kids to transport 😂

Costacoffeeplease · 10/03/2022 09:32

I looked at an Ecosport several years ago. I need certain features for my disability and found the Tourneo excellent. I’m on my second one now

SheWoreYellow · 10/03/2022 09:35

Have you measured how far out your current boot door goes when it opens? That’s the first thing I’d do, to compare. It might not be that different.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 10/03/2022 09:36

twinsetandpearl it isn’t a massive car, but the boot is spacious. The Kamiq is the smaller version and is what I have now. The platform is the same as VW, but the cars are better value for money.

That's a good idea think I'll do that

I can find 1 b max at the car place I've bought from before - I recall they were phased out years ago so don't think there will be much choice

Is it usually best to look for second hand car with less than 30,000 miles on the clock? My c max was ex Motability so had only done around 6,000 miles in 3 years

I have a Peugeot 2008 which has decent boot space and bigger than an eco sport but not ridiculously big.

How do you find the servicing and things like new tyres? My c max is around £200 for a service and no more than £80 for a tyre (the BMW I had was £700 for service and £200 for tyres!!)

I literally would buy an ecosport but for the annoying boot door and the fact you can't put a spare tyre in the boot! I love Fiestas but my back really could do with a higher up car... I am considering just getting another Fiesta tbh. I also don't want a massive car but I like Fords

Nannyamc · 10/03/2022 10:20

Worst car we ever owned . Gave nothing but trouble. Very small inside and boot door a pain. Had to replace after 6 months due to interior noise. Ford would not acknowledge fault and second one was just as bad

Replaced after 12 months for Toyota. Very low resale price

I've only had it 12 months (3 years old second hand) so not much experience of costs long term but it passed its first MOT last month and hasn't given us any problems so far. I think tires cost about £80 when we needed a couple last year.

Yes the interior noise is dreadful I can’t drive without the radio on to block it out as it gives me the rage. Thinking I will just have to take the hit and lose some money to change cars.
QforCucumber · 10/03/2022 10:35

I have a focus and the interior is bigger than the ecosport,

I found the ecosport more like a fiesta on stilts, whereas the Kuga is more similar to the focus, however the mpg on the Kuga is a bit useless.

Someone at work has just bought a 3 year old Focus estate which she absolutely loves and has me very tempted. My focus is 11 years old and barely costs a penny annually, I will upgrade next year (when out of the other end of nursery fees) and it will be another focus I think.
