Can anyone advise me on this mystery pain? It's bloody excruciating

It's been happening for about 2 weeks and has suddenly got worse. Intense, burning pain on the outer edge of my right foot, below the ankle and along towards the little toe. If I go out for a walk, I'm fine for about 100 metres and then it starts building up to the point where I'm limping and struggling to walk.

I will get it looked at, but appointments are hard to come by at the moment and I'm supposed to be going for a long walk on the moor on Saturday (planned for ages and looked forward to!) so if there's some exercise I can do or something, I'd love to know! DH thinks it might be referred pain from an ankle injury, but that's only because he had a football injury that caused a sore foot, so of course it MUST be the same thing

I have suffered with plantar fasciitis in the past, but this isn't that. It's a totally different pain and in a different place, plus it's only one foot.

Any ideas?

Stress fracture? Pop to minor injuries. I fractured my foot running to the photocopier at work and did not realise for ages that the epic pain was a fracture.

Gout??

DobbleDobble · 09/03/2022 20:33

Peroneal tendinitis.
I had this for about 3 months.
Only thing that helped was buying a pair of sock type ankle supports , wore them for 3 weeks every day and it helped massively.
Google the condition and can find helpful tips.( also same foot as used to get plantar fasciitis on too so may be a connection?)

Gout?!? Eek, I hope not! Doesn't gout usually start in the big toe?

I guess it could be a stress fracture. How bad is that, from a walking point of view? Would I be stuck in for weeks?

@DobbleDobble thank you, am googling it now!

If its a fracture you will need it immobilized and an xray

DobbleDobble · 09/03/2022 20:40

@sadpapercourtesan sounds like it matches the symptoms?!

A corn?

Stress fracture would be my guess.

Get it looked at. I walked on mine but compensated and ended up with stress fractures in two metatarsals - the original one plus the one where I moved my weight to to avoid the pain of the first one.

I went about ten days with it gradually getting worse until one day I couldn't put my foot down anymore!

I don't want to put ideas in your head and the pain may go as quickly as it started, we can sometimes injure ourselves without realising it; however you said you've had or have plantar fasciitis and you may have peripheral neuropathy. See how it goes, it might stop. However take magnesium and a good Vitamin B supplement. Apply pain killing gels such as Ibuprofen and Paingone. Vick's vapour rub on the area AND the soles of the feet is effective for many people.

Don't drink alcohol and, perish the thought, smoke which I am sure you do not anyway.

Apple cider vinegar is recommended too - also for gout.

Now I've said all that you'll probably come back in a couple of days, say all is well and we will be glad. Then you can just store away the information at the back of your mind in case you need it in the future. I hope that is the case.

Good luck.

PS: I found this on googling 'lateral burning foot pain' :
Peroneal tendonitis
Overuse or ankle injuries can both cause this. Symptoms of peroneal tendonitis include pain, weakness, swelling, and warmth just below or near your outer ankle. You may also feel a popping sensation in the area. Treating peroneal tendonitis depends on whether the tendons are torn or simply inflamed.
