How many toys do your kids have?

And how many do you think they actually need or actually play with?

You're not allowed to say too many 😂

What counts as '1' toy though. Does a storage tub of Playmobil count as 1 or actually 10 because it's made up of 10 different sets?

Whelmed · 08/03/2022 07:45

Impossible to count. They've got boxes of Legos, duplos, cars, soft toys, dolls, guns, tools, musical toys, playdoh, electronic toys and random assorted toys.... They have their favourite go to toys (cars, playdoh, soft toys) or just grab a nearest one and chase each other with that. I don't think they need that many tbh.

Haha I just meant roughly so a box of Lego would be one. I feel ashamed I don't know how many my kids have either. Im going to check later on. I just read this and was shocked 'It’s important not to overwhelm the play space with toys. As an approximate guide, try to keep the number of toys immediately available to under 4 for a premobile child, under 8 for a crawling child, and under 12 for a toddler, depending on the size of the space and number of parts to each toy. A set of stacking cups or a basket of duplo blocks counts as one toy by this rule. Another great rule of thumb: don't put out more toys than you are willing to clean up at any given time!'

Impossible to count the individual toys. But dd has a big toy box of loose things, 4 small boxes of specific things, ie art supplies in one box, building blocks in another. A large dolls house, a stupid amount of soft toys and a couple of outdoor toys.

She plays with the dolls house and the small specific boxes. I definitely feel she has too many soft toys, the big toy box rarely gets opened and the outdoor toys, bike and scooter don't get used because she's not very good with balance and movement.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 08/03/2022 09:35

Well we have over 100 dinosaurs and 4 dolls houses plus what feels like half the playmobil catalogue. The kids are devious though and make sure they play with everything on a regular basis to stop me clearing stuff out.

The biggest bone of contention is the soft toys. I hate them, they don't get played with but throwing them out is not allowed.

My dc are 6&8 and they have lots and lots of toys. Loads of tubs of lego. Gravitrax, k-nex, barbies, Our Generation dolls, play doh, galt sets, harumika, Sylvanian famikes, dolls house, imaginex, orchard games, top trumps.....Loads of lego. More lego. I've never had any rules really but I'm pretty good at getting rid of stuff they grow out of and don't play with

Borracha · 08/03/2022 09:43

A lot. A whole playroom full (no toys upstairs, only books in their bedrooms)

I am quite ruthless though about clearing things out on a regular basis, especially after birthdays and Christmas. Anything broken goes in the bin and anything in decent condition gets passed to someone else or donated.

I'm also relatively strict about what toys make it into the house (within reason, obviously I can't really control gifts) Anything that looks too plastic-y and like it will break easily is not allowed. Ditto with anything like slime or glitter. They get enough access to stuff like that at school, I don't want it in my house!

Legoisthebest · 08/03/2022 09:45

InDubiousBattle sounds like you need more Lego Grin
According to my Brickset account I have 557 Lego sets. Cool that I can count that as '1' Grin

merryhouse · 08/03/2022 10:30

@flyingdream that paragraph isn't about how many toys the children own, though. It's about how many are out at any one time.

If a small child is surrounded by a whole load of toys the chances are quite high that they'll be unable to make a choice and get stressed; or they'll flit from one to another without fully engaging with any; or they'll go for one thing every time (especially if it's got a screen). The advice is telling you to get out three or four things for the child to choose from to play with right now.

flyingdream · 08/03/2022 10:43

@merryhouse it's part of a decluttering article. modernminimalism.com/how-to-declutter-toys/

Apologies for the misunderstanding I just inserted that quote generally and not in relation to the question.
