I'm thinking about turning my electricity OFF over night

LaurieFairyCake · 08/03/2022 05:48

So last night before bed I took a meter reading and right now another

I've used 6 units of electricity over night (only me and Dh, pretty sure the dogs aren't boiling kettles over night)

That works out at £0.85 a night, £25.33 A MONTH Shock

The things that are running every night is fridge freezer, phone chargers, laptop chargers, the clock on the cooker

I've read it's fine to turn off the fridge freezer (no meat in it) as it won't spoil in 8 hours

I can't believe I would save £25 a month doing this !

Anything I've overlooked?

@jessieminto I hadn't seen your post when I wrote mine...I did remember correctly!!!

Given your job any chance you could let us know, roughly, how much it costs to power a router for a year?

I'm thinking you maybe have a colleague who knows the answer to this!

@LaurieFairyCake

Templeblossom

This isn't a rental property, this is the house I live in

How is this in poor taste, saving £300 a year Confused

To be fair op

You do say I've just taken out (and spent) £31k of credit for the first time in 20 years to get a rental up and running

Just a few weeks ago

@Bordois

Fucksake. We are on around £2 worth of electricity and gas when I get up at 6.30am usually around £8-9 by the time I go to bed around 11 😭

That's outrageously high compared to what a lit of people on here seem to use, and I dont really know how or why

I'm glad we aren't the only ones with astronomical electric bills. We rent a house with a shitty old air source heat pump and downstairs under floor heating. We're anywhere between £6-£8 a day depending on whether or not the washing machine or dryer have been on. Apparently we're supposed to leave the heating on permanently because it takes 100 years to heat the floors from cold therefore more efficient to leave on permanently. Also advised to leave the hot water on 24/7. We don't and just let it boost once a day as it is already programmed to do. I hate this house. Our not particularly cheap fixed rate ends on March 31 and I dread our future bills Sad.

6kW overnight is a lot. Our house will go through about 3.5kW midnight - 8am; but that is for a fridge-freezer, a chest freezer, a dehumidifier, a nightlight, heating pump, and sundry standbys. And our fridge-freezer is considerably older than yours so likely even less efficient.

Rather than switch your fridge off, would it be worth buying a usage monitor instead? It's basically a plug you plug into the wall and your appliance plugs into, and it monitors how many kW go through it. Then you could use it on each and every appliance in the house to track down just where the energy is being used. 6kW overnight does sound way too high.

Example of an energy monitor plug:

So improving a rental property for other to live in, is somehow construed as bad taste if then a few months later you’d be looking at saving a few ££

Landedonfeet · 08/03/2022 14:56

Of course not!

The PP was baffled that the Op was a second home owner and relished having regular Botox - and yet so stressed about £26 a month

Babamamananarama · 08/03/2022 14:59

6kw overnight is loads. We have a fridge freezer, a separate small freezer and separate small fridge and a radon fan that run 24/7 and we don't use anything like that overnight. We use between 11-15kwh in a 24 hr period with all the above plus electric showers, cooker, dishwasher, washing machine etc.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 08/03/2022 15:17

You don’t happen to have one of those old 500W halogen floodlights on outside do you? 12 hours of that being on would be 6kWh of electricity!

LaurieFairyCake · 08/03/2022 15:25

I don't have any floodlights and I too think 6kw overnight is bloody loads

Lol at RELISHING regular Botox Hmm Can't believe someone's gone and looked at the 'how much do you spend on beauty treatments' thread (not my thread) - found my post and decided the twice I've had Botox is me RELISHING it HmmHmmHmm

Just wtf

I have it

I relish it

Bloody brilliant

Why the heck stop after 2?!

Landedonfeet · 08/03/2022 15:37

I’d turn off my fridge… for good if it was the choice between that and Botox!

LaurieFairyCake · 08/03/2022 15:40

I will make sure to relish it from now on Wink

With (hopefully) my savings from turning my electric off

I'm not stressed at the £28 a month, just seems like a complete waste if I don't need to spend it and I can see from the responses that burning 6kw is bloody loads

I know exactly what you mean

No one wants to waste money on leccy

Just we all have different ways of doing it

Me turning the router off at night is more about stopping me going online when I can't sleep.

Landedonfeet · 08/03/2022 15:57

They've made a massive difference and I'm going back for more. My skin looks hydrated and bouncy again.

Newt 50…. Makes me look 40*

I mean it doesn’t sound like you didn’t Relish it Grin

TatianaBis · 08/03/2022 16:06

TatianaBis · 08/03/2022 16:10

Hell no, I have chosen fridge every time.

Ah - you’ve not tried!
WiseUpJanetWeiss · 08/03/2022 16:56

@LaurieFairyCake

I don't rent my property Confused

And yes I have 2 lots of Botox a year, and the money I save doing this will pay for half of it !

We thought putting the milk/yoghurt in the freezer part of the fridge freezer overnight would be a genius idea Grin - they won't freeze - and they can go back on in the fridge in the morning

Putting items that are at about 5C into a freezer that is supposed to be at -18C is a genius way to speed up the thawing of whatever you have in your freezer...
TatianaBis · 08/03/2022 16:59

Oh I don't need to try it to know that I don't want to inject a toxin into my face to freeze it.

Particularly as I have read scientific studies indicating that tiny quantities of the botulinum toxin, too small to be mapped by the standard radiolabelling process, spread from the injection site within days and were strong enough to interfere with nerve signalling elsewhere in the body.

There is no simple answer to that question I'm afraid, as your usage increases the amount of power used. Different routers draw differing levels of power as well. We're all also paying different rates for electricity, standing charges and blah blah the techie people do like to be precise or not give an answer at all!!

But it's roughly £8 per year now. Less than £1 difference per year between worst and best for power usage at calculated at its peak.

More info here for anyone interested, it was written 5 yrs ago but still holds true except for the cost of electricity! Grin

Maybe you need the Botox because you are stressed with all of this stress plus getting weather-beaten with all the in and out 😂😂😂 PS I am joking.
