Which size nappy to donate?

I know, it’s a riveting topic! What else would I be thinking about at midnight, in bed on a Monday night but nappy sizes.

DC have all been asked at school to donate a box of items to give to people in Ukraine, from the list I decided on nappies but now I’m wondering which size to get. I was thinking maybe 3 or 4 but then I read that charities often struggle for bigger sizes, 5 plus.

Please help so I can stop overthinking this.

I know the school are doing this from a good place but everything I've read is about money being needed. I can see loads going to waste.

NKFell · 08/03/2022 00:25

Not my decision. CAFOD gave a list of items needed and gave it to school, nappies are on the list so I’m including nappies.

I’m wondering which size would be best.

All sizes will be needed and appreciated.

NKFell · 08/03/2022 00:30

Thanks @frenchfancy81 I know I’m just overthinking and overthinking again.

I appreciate the replies, I really do.

My Mum, my DH and I pooled our resources and I bought a pack in each size from Lidl. Plus toothbrushes (baby, child and adult sizes) toothpaste, soap, deodorant etc. plus sanitary towels.

daisydalrymple · 08/03/2022 00:34

My first thought was size 4. So I’d say avoid size 4, as I bet a lot of people will go for size 4 as middle of the road size. I bet they’ll have less smaller and bigger.

BobLep0nge · 08/03/2022 00:38

You can choose not to dontate items. Donate money, your money will buy more nappies in Poland than it will here.

NKFell · 08/03/2022 09:17

Thank you @GreenFingersWouldBeHandy and @daisydalrymple I’ve got 3 and 5. It’s a very specific list, it actually says they don’t need toothbrushes- that particular charity must have enough. It’s basically nappies, sanitary items and sleeping bags. I’ve donated nappies and sanitary items, hopefully they help!

Surely bigger ones as they can be used for a wider range of children, a too big nappy can be made tighter, but a small one can’t really be made bigger.

KylieCharlene · 08/03/2022 09:25

The smaller the nappy the more you get in a pack so therefore I think some people will be buying smaller ones as they're getting more iyswim.
I'd go for the larger ones/pull-up sizes

It is better to send money.

It is wonderful that people are so moved. Think, however, of the situation on the ground. Hard pressed workers are being over whelmed with stuff that needs sorting, distributing, warehousing.

Friends were (still are!) involved with the aftermath of the Grenfell fire. In the end, those boxes and crates of goods that came in with such good intentions caused such problems,

More reading if you want to follow up. "In my years on the job, I came to think of it as “the disaster within the disaster.” In every case, I saw how this second disaster made it nearly impossible for humanitarian responders to run efficient relief operations. The influx of donations clogged shelters, airport tarmacs and warehouses, and drained the time and energy of the willing but scarce volunteers. And if you’re wondering why relief organizations don’t just give the extra stuff to others that could use it, think about it: In the middle of their own unfolding disaster, they don’t have the labor, facilities or equipment to repackage and re-route the unsolicited stuff."https://ideas.ted.com/after-a-disaster-dont-send-toys-or-clothing-send-money-heres-why/?fbclid=IwAR0XIM2BfggpJxaJiY257xqVNtRHJu4XqKrYz2OUZtzyE3u1p-AGNLAl4vg

@Errorschach crikey, I didn’t really want to go into this much detail, CAFOD workers came to the school and are off to Ukraine to help people in Ukraine. These particular ground workers asked for donations from a specific list, CAFOD could’ve asked for money, they often do. In this instance they have asked for specific items, one of which was nappies, I decided on nappies. They had to be at the school by 1pm today, they were. Sorry if I’m being ratty, I probably am being, I’ve been on MN long enough to know ‘ask a simple question, get a complex answer’ 😂

Thanks everyone for the replies, I got size 3 and size 5.

Any but I would suggest 3, my kids were only in 3's when the daytime trained aged 3.5 ish dd2 and age 4 dd1 after which we used pull-ups at night (actually we mostly used cloth but for holidays I did but disposable) I had skinny dds's! One is still a stick in her 20's, they don't get it from me!

leviosa123 · 08/03/2022 16:36

I would have said size 5, 6 or even 7 (though they are harder to find). People will usually go for smaller or middle of the road I bet.

SuperSocks · 08/03/2022 16:44

For those saying donate money instead, it might be as much about teaching the children about charity as actually doing something practical to help. I remember when I was back in nursery we had a collection for the civilians caught in the Bosnian war. It made a HUGE impression on me. I remember looking at this box of baby rice and realising that there were little children like me who didn't have any food, and we had to help. Children are such visual learners I don't think even if I'd been older and we'd been told at a school assembly that we should give money it would have made that much of an impact on me.

BUT having said that do raise it with the school if you're brave enough! They should at least suggest donating cash as an alternative option. It would be a good maths activity for the children to count it up.
