How do you break the sugar habit? Just eaten 1/3 jar of nutella 😟

Honestly im addicted to sugar. Im 65kg and 5 foot 4 so not massively overweight.
I need to eat sugar every 2 hours or i become irritated and cranky.

Every day starts with a chocolate croissant or toast and Nutella and the sugar rush continues throughout the day, even when ive had a big meal and as soon as ive eaten i hate myself 🙈.

Work is really stressful, my dad is ill and im recovering from an operation which has just made it worse.

Cold turkey doesnt work as I just walk over to the local sainsburys and buy more chocolate 🤦‍♀️. I excersize 4 times a week but i cant break the habit

Please, does anyone mastered this?

Could you try Porridge (hot) or cold overnight oats for breakfast. There are millions of fancy recipes all over the Internet for things like carrot cake/chocolate pudding/Peanut butter overnight oats so you can always start with that as although it's still sweet they should fill you up for longer. Then do alternate days with just fresh fruit/a natural sugar like honey. Try both - for some reason I gag trying to eat hot Porridge but love overnight oats (which is basically just cold Porridge really!)

I have a cup of options when I really need that sugar feeling - diff flavours and only 40 cals.

Good luck! I'm trying to reduce sugar but I'm lucky in that I don't have a shop within easy walking distance so I only have to exercise willpower once a week when I do the big shop then my laziness overwhelms my cravings!

That dessert has quite a lot of honey as well. I would avoid it or leave out the honey. I haven’t eaten sugary stuff for over a month and I am a lot less hungry now. I eat plenty of veg and protein. I would be strict for a week or so just to let things settle. You will be amazed how sweet ordinary things taste once your taste buds reset.

My new sugar diet is going so well at the moment I didn’t even stop to look in the outdoor cake fridge in the village on my walk today!

I clearly meant no sugar diet!🤣

@dipdye I liked booked eggs!

Boxowine · 09/03/2022 00:35

Do you have actual cravings or a psychological need to snack? I have to cut back on my sugar intake also. I am trying peppermints and sugar free water flavoring packets.

[quote MrsGethinJones]Thanks everyone!

I havent gone through all of the messages as im still at work but i was looking at this recipe and think it could work as a treat if i reduced the amount of chocolate? Looks really tasty!

Today has been much better than expected, ive just had a cup of tea with a square of dark chocolate.

There seem to be so many of us trying to kick this sugar habit on this thread - would anyone be interested in a whatsapp chat group for moral support/accountability? If yes please pm me and I could set one up

The recipe does look nice but honey is still sugar - refined and processed by flowers and bees.

David Gillespie talks about using dextrose as a fructose replacement and while I get the theory, I still think it’s got the same addictive properties and can set you back.

It’s good to think of your triggers and how to replace the sugar with something else.

Desserts/treats I have (when I am being good): Fruit and plain full fat yoghurt, good cheese, occasionally nuts although I don’t find them very filling.

When I first quit sugar I took to buying scratch cards in petrol stations as a habit replacement - a waste of money and also addictive but not physically unhealthy! Now I pay at the pump usually.

A helpful image I have is that once you have gone around three weeks without sugar then chocolates, cakes and biscuits will be like raw broccoli to you. Not disgusting but not something you would chose to snack on and you just ignore it.

BaconAndAvocado · 09/03/2022 08:42

Ohhh the sugar monster is a very demanding soul 😂
I've definitely cut down on sugar through cutting out most snacks between meals during the week.
At the weekend I'll have some chocolate, a few biscuits etc as I enjoy them and life is short.

Speak for yourself. I love raw broccoli. It's one of my staples in my Buddha bowl.

How are you doing OP? Am 2 weeks into this 👇and it’s significantly taken the sting out of the sugar cravings and I feel loads better. Should add this has come after several failed attempts at Cambridge diet meal replacement - worked once spectacularly but has proved unsustainable! And still craved sugar on it!

MrsGethinJones · 09/03/2022 20:43

Not bad here @Bobbins36! Unfortunately ive replaced the chocolate crossant with toast (and eggs) but ive been full till lunch and i thought it better to just get off the sugar to start with. Ive just had a creme egg after dinner but was good yesterday and only because DD bought me it.
Ill get back on track tomorrow, yesterday was fine.

That book looks good! I willl take a look!

@MrsGethinJones good luck! Keep us posted, so many of us in the same boat! Xx

notacooldad · 10/03/2022 22:00

How's it going op?
Today was ok for me which is strange as I found a load of chocolate limes in my handbag that I love, I turned down a free meal and drinks out this evening. At work there was a few bars of Twirls and Galaxy bars in the cupboard. I had none of them ( never been known!) Trouble is, I'm not feeling any different!

Flockameanie · 10/03/2022 22:23

For me it was about not making sugar forbidden (so the opposite of cutting it out completely). I think the idea of it being something I shouldn't eat meant that whenever I did eat it it would be with a 'I'd better eat it all now because I don't know when I'm next going to get this'.

I started counting macros a few years ago (I used the calculator on macrosinc.net they also have a FB page) and massively upped my protein intake. Now I fit a little bit of chocolate and usually something else sweet, in every day, but I don't go bonkers because I know I'll be having a little bit again tomorrow, etc.

Also, as others have said, a high protein savoury breakfast is key for me. I have a kind of spinach and mushroom scrambled eggs/ omlette thing with extra egg whites. Plus a slice of sourdough toast.

MrsGethinJones · 11/03/2022 10:55

Not bad today @notacooldad- you are doing so well!
Ive just had a glass on unsweetened keffir for breakfast as my supermarket shop isnt arriving till evening, could have done with something more filling but thats ok

Well done for keeping off the sweets !!

notacooldad · 28/03/2022 10:58

I thought of you Op and wondered how you are doing.
I have made a decision about my diet.
I am still mostly having a sugar free time. No sweets, cakes, heavily processed food etc and I'm fine with that. I'm not missing things.
However when I go out for an occasion I will relax. I went for lunch on Saturday and had a lasagna and out for a meal last night and had a teriyaki stir fry. On both occasions the menu was very limited. I had two cocktails last night and I dont regret it.
Every time I e been to a pub over the last few weeks I've had side water with slices if orange and lemon in.
I didnt realise how much pressure or querying there is from people when you dont want something to eat!
I was out with my cycling group last Monday. At the cafe I ordered sparkinh water. Everyone else was on croissants, cake, hot chocolate etcand wanting to know why I wasnt!!
At work I'm just putting the chocolate bars back in the cupboard, I'm not having ice cream when we go out and I'm not having cake when it's getting passed around and colleagues are like 😮🤔
I've just got a supply of excuses now! ( I've just had breakfast, I'm eating out after etc)

Billybagpuss · 28/03/2022 14:26

I agree @notacooldad I found people are more accepting if you’re not drinking that if you’re not eating pudding
