Skincare advice for dry skin- cheap and cheerful!

I need to totally overhaul my skin routine. I have got so lazy with it when all my products ran out so need to buy some more.
My skin is very dry and dehydrated, when I put my make up on it can look quite flakey in places (especially on forehead).
What lotions and potions would you recommend? I do always moisturise but I feel I need something more on top of that too .

I swear by this range www.boots.com/no7-skincare/no7-hydraluminous-skincare

ELF is good too, especially their nourishing night cream.

I recommend face theory all the time! I don’t have dry skin so can’t recommend a specific product but they have a quiz to tell you which products to try. My mum bought a serum and moisturiser that really helped her dry skin, I use products for oily skin. Not too pricey but very effective and packaged in recyclable packaging.

I use Aveeno as a moisturiser. It's brilliant for my skin as it acts as a barrier as well as a moisturiser. I'm aware MN dislikes it as it's mineral oil based though.

I also use a cream cleanser (cheapie from Superdrug) as a first cleanser and micellar water as a second cleanser. I exfoliate with glycolic acid pads every other day. Seems to work for me!

I use a locally-made moisturiser made with all natural ingredients which isn't too awful at £30 a jar (more than Simple but not as bad as the really expensive stuff)

Apparently an important thing with make-up to stop flaking is to match your primer and foundation (i.e. use oil-based foundation and primer or water-based foundation and primer but don't mix and match)

Urea cream, anything with 5-10% (I don’t get on with eucerin though). Improves your skin’s moisture barrier.

I like Q+A. www.qandaskin.com. they are doing a deal on the mighty moisturiser bundle right now.

On my face I use Aldi Q10 serum

On my body I use
www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07KXYM384/ref=sns_myd_detail_page?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

both work really well and, being cheap, I never think that I'll put it off. Daily face and body cost me less than a fiver a month. I've had more expensive things that work as well (not better) but I scrimp with them, use as little as possible so don't get the best from them. With these I use as much as I need as often as I need without worrying about running out as replacements are so inexpensive,

My skin is also sensitive and these do not cause me any problems at all.

How do you cleanse your face? Double cleansing in the evening and once in the morning, with an oil based cleanser (doesn't have to be expensive), and removing with a flannel will really help with flakiness. Glycolic acid toner (The Ordinary do a good one for £7 that will last you months) also brilliant for flakiness

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/03/2022 22:27

I use Micellar water to cleanse then Cerave to moisturise
My skin is very sensitive and prone to blotches so I find "less is more"

GuyFawkesDay · 07/03/2022 22:31

Dry skin needs exfoliating too, try a gentle acid like lactic or a basic glycolic (boots and superdrug do cheap ones) which will help your skin be less flaky.

Moisturiser wise it depends if your skin is dry or dehydrated.

I do think the superdrug or boots own ranges are a decent place to start, the new pink bottle boots range is reasonably priced and covers a lot of bases.

I've been using Bioderma Sebium Hydra for a month now and been impressed.

Either The Ordinary, squalane cleanser, glycolic acid serum, moisturising factors (my dd loves this and she has very dry, sensitive skin)

Or

Aldi pineapple hot cloth cleanser, rose oil and caviar moisturiser. I have extremely dry, sensitive, reactive skin to the extent that I usually make my own skincare stuff but I really like this routine and I don't react to it. I occasionally use an overnight AHA serum with rose oil as well.
