School Uniform practicalities

Eldest son in Y6 about to go up to Secondary school. Know now which school he is going to so looking at school uniform.

The practicalities - how many pairs of trousers? How many shirts? How many jumpers?

Readyforspring · 07/03/2022 16:47

I did 2 pe kit too as often would have 2 days in a row.

Mine are girls but I am planning on two skirts, five shirts, two jumpers, one blazer.

One full set of PE kit to begin with until we know what days / clubs they want to go to. If they are consecutive days will realistically have to get another set. the PE kit is ££££££££

LovingKent · 07/03/2022 16:51

2 trousers, 6 shirts, 2 jumpers. Also bought 2 lots of sports kit as DC has it 2 days in a row. Get as much as you can secondhand. Cheaper and better for the planet Smile

TheSmallAssassin · 07/03/2022 16:52

Or just keep one set of PE kit that only gets washed at half term, which is what seemed to happen in our house Blush

I used to hate the shirts and trousers I got bought for me. Hated the feel, the fit, the style. The uniform supplier does also do school shirts and trousers and I might default to them for Y7.

Not been a problem at Junior School as little kids tend not to care (and dont sweat!) but realise this is all about to change

Otherwise, we had pretty much the same as @LovingKent, except mine never wore their jumpers. The non iron shirts from M&S are really good, and you really don't need to iron them as long as you hang them up straight away.

shoofly · 07/03/2022 16:55

2 trousers, 6 shirts. 1 jumper (very rarely worn) 1 blazer (wool do has to be dry cleaned 🙄) 2 sets pe kit as worn on consecutive days and can't be tumble dried

PineappleWilson · 07/03/2022 16:57

Definitely 2 sets of PE kit. He does PE on a weekly basis, and at one stage did Friday of one week and Monday then Tuesday of the next. PE kit worn all day and no access to changing rooms.

Also get a school jumper as well as a blazer if they allow them, in case they still have windows open post-Covid.

I'd recommend M&S. They had all the sizes we needed on the website and arrived promptly.

2 pairs of trousers
6 shirts
1 blazer
2 jumpers
1set of PE kit

My tip is to see what the pupils at the school actually wear, compared with the official school list. DS is in year 7 and we bought him the school coat which he refuses to wear (and not many of the pupils wear it either). Nor does he use the valuables bag for PE lessons, which was also on the list!!

I spoke with the staff in the uniform shop and the SA said that the PE bag was popular. I put off buying it and I'm pleased I did, as it's far too big and bulky for DS, so it would have been a wasted purchase.
