How much is your energy bill?

We moved into our first home in September last year, we were previously in a rented house paying £80 a month for gas and electric. Our new home is with Bulb and we are currently paying £152 a month based on the previous owners use, although I’ve calculated our actual use for the past 6 months has been around £109 a month. Our new tariffs mean our bill is going up to £267 a month.

I did shop around for a different energy company when we moved but because we’re new home owners an

Do you mean you are going onto a fixed tariff?
I'm choosing not to fix just now

MistySkiesAfterRain · 07/03/2022 13:41

I pay £77 for electricity and £20-£35 for heating. So £100-£115 a month.

Don't have gas, 2 bedroom new build.

Clarkey86 · 07/03/2022 13:44

4 bed detached, 2 children and a lot of washing machine and tech use. We are paying very similar to you.

Sorry I posted before I finished typing. I meant to say I shopped around but because we’re in a 5 bedroom house all the quotes were over £300, even though there’s only 3 of us. Today I had a look on EOn website and they’re now quoting me in excess of £500.

It’s insane. We’re stuck on variable with Bulb because that’s what the previous owner had and there are no fixed priced deals to be had anymore.

I've just set up my new direct debits for my new tariff - I took a fix 3 days before the cap announcement which turned out to be a very good move because it is in line with the new cap, which means come October we'll be paying less than the SVR and until then just paying the same. We are a 5 bed home, but we have 6 people living in it. We have solar panels, and will be paying £270 a month. £150 electricity, £120 gas. I anticipate being in credit with the electricity within 6 months. Gas is in line with usage IMO.

HopefulProcrastinator · 07/03/2022 13:52

Bulb cannot charge you anymore than any other provider on the standard variable tariff with the price cap so shopping around is a fruitless exercise until after the price rise on April 1st. More providers are likely to start offering fixed price deals then - but they'll be more expensive than the cap.

Keep submitting actual meter readings on a monthly basis. At the end of the day they can only bill you on what you physically use. The Direct Debit is fully in your control, if you don't like the installment amount just cancel it and pay the bill each time it lands - that's what we've done. There's a slight increase to the cost being off direct debit (something like £50 a year) but it means we really do only pay for what we use.

oreo2020 · 07/03/2022 13:57

I am in modest 3 bed and so far paid £110pm for 3 people's electricity and gas usage.
Just received EON renewal quote - it's an estimation of either £220 variable, or £255pm fixed deal. No clue what I am going to do yet but in either case it's biting me hard!

CandleWick4 · 07/03/2022 14:03

I was paying £130 a month for both. 3 bed detached house and I’ve just fixed in with Eon for 12 months and I’ll be paying £300 a month now. We’re really going to have to tighten our belts for a while.

I know, there’s no point in fixing now even if we could. I think I’ll switch to paying monthly what we use rather than DD.

I know there’s meant to be a 52% increase in tariffs from April and then again in October but some of the figures quoted here and what we’re paying far exceeds that. Also the standing charge for electricity has doubled. That’s nothing do with supply issues, surely.

Check your unit costs and usage and also how your direct debit aligns with your month cost. If your balance starts to go too much in credit, ask them to reduce the direct debit.

As others have said, it's likely you're on the price cap tariff, which is effectively a six month fix that will go up by 54% for people with a typical gas/electricity mix on 1 April.

If you can't fix with bulb, it's probably worth staying on their variable because a fix with another supplier is likely to be much more expensive because none of them want new customers right now unless they can charge them a profitable price, which adds up to a huge amount.

BarbaraofSeville · 07/03/2022 14:16

One of the reasons the standing charge has gone up so much is the costs associated with the remaining suppliers taking on the customers of the companies that went bust last year. A bit has been added to everyone's bills due to this.

ifonly4 · 07/03/2022 14:25

We're with Bulb, currently paying £65pm and our new estimated payment will be £114pm. House was originally a two bed bungalow, but extended at back and dormers to included two more beds and bathroom. I think ours is low as we don't use a tumble dryer, dishwasher, hairdryers and I think we're fairly careful switching things off if not in use, we don't have heating going all day. Either way it's a worry with petrol, food and other products going up in price.

lms2017 · 07/03/2022 14:29

We moved into our new house in October , our bill to date just for gas is £2689!!!

This isn't the old owners account and ours. Its theirs and their mistake ; you can clearly see the reading jumping from 1450 units to 3500 something in a day.

Yet it will take 12 weeks to sort.

This is with OVO we have had nothing but problems.

lms2017 · 07/03/2022 14:30

*it's our account only not the previous owners readings etc and it's OVO mistake

TeeBee · 07/03/2022 14:31

4-bed house, 3 of us living here (I WFH) = ~£400/month. Ridiculous!

Hiddenmnetter · 07/03/2022 14:32

I fixed my electricity last October at 14p. I’ve just fixed my gas.

My bill is going from £120/month to £270/month

MintJulia · 07/03/2022 14:40

Last year, two winter quarters were £400 each for both gas & electric. The summer quarters were £125 each, so about £1050pa

But I have a log burner and access to free wood so the gas heating comes on in the morning and then only very low in the evening.

After April, who knows...? I've started to turn everything off at the wall and have stopped ironing most things.

MintJulia · 07/03/2022 14:41

£400 a month ! Shock

pawpaws2022 · 07/03/2022 14:44

£65pm for gas and electric but I'm on a low fixed rate

FourTeaFallOut · 07/03/2022 14:44

Our monthly direct debit is £260.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/03/2022 14:45

4 bed detached, 3 kids, electric car and recent fixed rate tariff.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 07/03/2022 14:47

ours has gone from £210 to £300. five bed / three storey terrace.

jazzandh · 07/03/2022 14:50

4 bedroom house, 2 teens, DH wfh, and EV and we are just under £400 at the moment!

We have a lot of tech that runs and the washing machine is on once a day (but I do mainly line dry).

Thank goodness the weather should at least be warming up soon.

L40Postcode · 07/03/2022 14:55

Ours has gone up from 280 a month to 405.
6 bedroomed house, 3 adults, with me wfh.

AchillesLastStand · 07/03/2022 14:58

In our house we don’t have the heating on except for the morning for an hour, and a couple of hours in the evening when it’s cold.

We have no dishwasher, no hairdryer and I do 5 washes a week on a quick 30 degree wash. I have a low energy heated airier for the winter months. We have LED bulbs everywhere. I don’t know what else we can do.
