Can anyone tell me if you hand in your notice before references have been sought if a job offer is subject to references? It's not for me I am asking I just want to have the right information before advising someone. Thanks.

I probably should have put this in the employment section. Can anyone help?

I did. I gave 3 months notice before I found a job and then found job within a month.

I have always been advised to wait until the references came back ok, and then give notice.

You should hand in your notice after you have received the new job offer in writing. References should be gained after notice has been handed in. Usually when giving the new employer details of references (names/email address) they will ask if they can contact immediately, always say 'no, please wait until offer has been excepted'. (Congratulations on new job)

It's not me it's my DD who has got a new job. This is her second since graduation and she wasn't quite sure what she should do.

I work in recruitment and whenever we offer a job it is always 'subject to references' When the references have been approved then a start date is discussed and a contract prepared. We would only expect the person to hand in their notice once they have received the contract. The start date will take into account the notice period.
On a couple of occasions we have withdrawn the job offer after reading unsatisfactory references.
So, please, advise your friend to wait for a firm offer before handing in their notice

Thank you all. She plans to wait until her references have been received.

Surely you have to give one referee as your current job though, so they'd know you were planning on leaving.
