Can you have mastitis without red/hot patch?

9pm I noticed one of my boobs was a bit tender but no lumps or redness so didn't think much of it.

By 11pm I was lying in bed shivering and aching all over.

Do I just have flu or is this the start of mastitis? I feel absolutely horrendous!

Yep, you can. I had lumpy bits in my boobs, but they weren’t hot or red.

The GP prescribed antibiotics over the phone, and they started working within hours. Thankfully.

Yes, I did. Fever of 40+, shivering, delirious but no obvious pain in boobs. I was only a few days post section and taking morphine due to post dural puncture headache so I think that may have masked any pain in boobs.
Went to the maternity unit concerned about infection and had to have IV antibiotics as it was quite a nasty case (I guess because I'd left it a few days not realising what it was).

Just to add, I didn't have any redness or hot patches either.

Yes it doesn't always come up and/or can come later after fever. If you're shivery get onto your gp for antibiotics. Feed, rest, empty the breast. It's so tough, you have my sympathies.

Enidcat5 · 07/03/2022 07:05

You've got the antibiotics, sorry skim read. I hope they kick in soon

As poster above said, feed, rest, empty the breast. It is truly horrible but hopefully you begin to feel better soon Thanks

Thanks everyone, I will send off an econsult to the GP this morning. DH has gone back to work today after paternity leave, I honestly don't know how I'm going to cope with a toddler and newborn feeling like this.

How long ago did you give birth? The maternity unit I had my youngest at would see you for 28 days post birth and that was the quickest way for me to be seen.

On days like this definitely sack off any preconceptions about 'good parenting'. Stick on a Disney film for the wee one and chill on a sofa with the baby. Paracetamol will calm the fever and shivers but call for dh to come home if you can't cope as mastitis is horrible and he needs to help you if you're not well
BreadmanAndCake · 07/03/2022 07:14

I would advise CBeebies on tap, snacks and juice close to hand (you and your toddler) and make up a snuggly area on the sofa and camp out there for the day. If possible see if your dh can stay home from work?

Just a quick update, spoken to the doctor and been given antibiotics. I now have a big red patch above my nipple.

Toddler will definitely be having a TV day today! Thanks for all your help x

Are you me? Dh is also back at his first day of work after paternity leave and the mastitis hit overnight. I got the 3yo to gymnastics, then my pil took him and picked up his big brother from school for me while I got to the gp and pharmacist with baby so I did have some help. The red patch turns up later with me too.

This happened to me! I went to a&e for antibiotics as it was a bank holiday weekend and I had a 40° fever and pain but no redness or lump. Got the antibiotics and came home and had a shower and in the couple of hours it had taken I suddenly had a bright red patch. I still have a lump there a couple of months later.
